Guidry lifts Crown Royal aboard Duveen

Andrew Farm's DUVEEN (Horse Chestnut [SAf]) parlayed a pace-prompting trip into victory in Friday's $188,700 Crown Royal American Turf S. (G3) at Churchill Downs. Expertly ridden by Mark Guidry, who had celebrated his 5,000th career win earlier on the card, the dark bay sophomore shadowed Jazz Quest (Jambalaya Jazz) through fractions of :24 3/5, :50 and 1:14 4/5. Duveen overtook the longtime leader in the stretch and had enough left to hold off the rallying Whatsthescript (Ire) (Royal Applause [GB]) by a half-length. The Dale Romans pupil completed 1 1/16 miles on yielding turf in 1:44 to extend his winning streak to three.

"I told everybody a month ago that he would win this race," Guidry said. "He was fresh today and he was really pumped up in the post parade. I tried to keep him as relaxed as possible and when we turned for home, he really exploded for me. I think he has a great future."

Whatsthescript was caught behind horses at the top of the lane, and once he extricated himself, found another gear, but his thrust fell short. Jazz Quest held on dourly for third, another half-length behind the runner-up. Marcavelly (Johannesburg), the nearly 3-1 favorite, wound up a one-paced fourth.

"The big crowd may have had something to do with it because he was very rank and wouldn't settle for Edgar (Prado)," Marcavelly's trainer Bill Mott noted. "(The soft turf) could have been a factor, but the big thing was how anxious and rank he was."

Distorted Reality (Distorted Humor), Top Cross (Gone West), Birdbirdistheword (Pure Prize), Royal War Academy (Royal Academy), Delightful Kiss (Kissin Kris) and Cobrador (El Prado [Ire]) rounded out the order under the wire. Imawildandcrazyguy (Wild Event) was scratched in favor of running in Saturday's Kentucky Derby (G1).

Dispatched as the 9-2 third choice in the 10-horse field, Duveen returned $11.20, $6.20 and $5.20 while keying exotics worth $50.60 (exacta), $622.40 (trifecta) and $2,176.80 (4-2-3-5 supefecta). Whatsthescript gave back $5.40 and $4.20 at 7-2, and the 17-1 Jazz Quest paid $7.40 to show.

Duveen improved his record to 7-3-1-0 while boosting his bankroll to $203,640. After finishing off the board in his first three starts on the main track, he just missed by a neck in his turf debut and hasn't tasted defeat in three subsequent outings on the grass. He broke his maiden by 4 1/4 lengths and then took the Palm Beach S. (G3) by a nose.

Bred in Kentucky by Richard Brodie, Robert Scanlon and James Buckley, Duveen RNA'd for $140,000 as a two-year-old in training at Keeneland last April. He is out of Grade 3-placed Casanova Storm (Storm Cat), who has also produced the stakes-winning Cherry Hill Lady (Grand Slam) and a yearling colt by Chapel Royal.
