Silver turns to gold in La Troienne

Silverinyourpocket relished her return to the dirt (Lauren Pomeroy/Horsephotos.com)

Mr. & Mrs. R. David Randal's homebred SILVERINYOURPOCKET (Silver Deputy) was the beneficiary of a rail-skimming ride from jockey Calvin Borel to take Saturday's $182,850 La Troienne S. (G3) at Churchill Downs. The Helen Pitts charge rallied up the inside to post a half-length victory in the 7 1/2-furlong test, stopping the clock in 1:30 over the fast dirt.

Appealing Zophie (Successful Appeal), favored at 9-5, moved up to take the lead, setting splits of :22 2/5, :45 1/5 and 1:10 while closely tracked by Time's Mistress (Mr. Greeley). In the stretch, those two began backing up as their rivals moved into contention. Silverinyourpocket, settled next to last in the early running, came storming up the rail to take over late, easily holding Suaveness (Suave Prospect) to second.

Sent off the 9-2 second pick, Silverinyourpocket gave back $11.60, $5.60 and $4.20 while keying the $225.40 exacta and $1,523.80 trifecta. Suaveness was the 22-1 eighth choice in the field of 10, returning $15.40 and $8.40 for holding Upcoming Story (Tale of the Cat), who was never far back of the pacesetters early, to third by 1 1/4 lengths. Show paid $4.80 and it was another length back to Looky Yonder (Johannesburg), who completed the $12,277.20 superfecta (3-11-1-9). Next under the line were Time's Mistress, Appealing Zophie, Pro Pink (Touch Gold), Tessa Blue (Awesome Again), Tensas Yucatan (Ide) and Total (Forest Wildcat). Mostbeautifulstorm (Storm Boot) was scratched.

Silverinyourpocket earned her first stakes score with this one, and is now undefeated on the dirt from three starts. She made her two starts prior to this race on the Polytrack at Turfway Park and Keeneland, finishing off the board in those two stakes tries, but returned to her favored surface here to push her earnings to $171,503 and improve her line to 5-3-0-0.

The Kentucky-bred sophomore is out of the stakes-placed Puff O Luck (Run of Luck), who has also produced multiple stakes-placed Puff of Carb (Carborundum) and an unnamed yearling colt by Forest Wildcat.
