Time flies in Miss Preakness

Charles Kidder's TIME'S MISTRESS (Mr. Greeley) was content to let the pacesetters duel themselves out of contention before rallying in deep stretch to take Friday's $125,000 Miss Preakness S. (G3) at Pimlico. The D. Wayne Lukas-trained sophomore was 1 3/4 lengths clear at the wire and finished six furlongs in 1:10 2/5 on the fast dirt.

"I was pleased with this," said Lukas, who will saddle Flying First Class (Perfect Mandate) in Saturday's Preakness S. (G1). "This was a good effort. I think she's a little better at this distance. I think I'll keep her under a mile if I can."

Sea the Joy (Stormy Atlantic) was quickest from the gate when the doors opened, but found herself quickly passed by the speedy Your Flame in Me (Boundary), who was attempting to move her record to a perfect four-for-four. Those two battled through a speedy quarter in of :22 4/5, with Sea the Joy losing momentum rounding the turn. Your Flame in Me was also noticeably tiring, moving out toward the center of the track when exiting the turn through a half-mile in :45 4/5 and allowing Silver Knockers (Silver Deputy) to move up along the rail to take over. That one looked a clear winner, but suddenly found herself challenged by the late-running Time's Mistress, who had been biding her time in midpack under a patient Mark Guidry. The pair steadily gained on Silver Knockers, cruising past the leader on the outside and going on to score at nearly 8-1.

Time's Mistress rewarded her backers with payouts of $17.80, $6 and $3.80 while keying the $55.80 exacta and $323.60 trifecta. Silver Knockers was easily best of the rest, finishing 3 3/4 lengths in front of Richwoman (Successful Appeal) to return $3.60 and $2.80 at 2-1. Show gave back $4.20 at 9-1, and it was another 2 1/4 lengths back to Acadia Breeze (Royal Academy), who ended the $1,171.80 superfecta (7-2-5-3) at 9-1. Your Flame in Me was next under the line and followed by Magnetic Miss (Artax) and Sea the Joy. Five Star Daydream (Five Star Day) and You Asked (Yes It's True) were both withdrawn.

Time's Mistress earned her first stakes score in the Honeybee S. in March after consecutive third-placings in the Dixie Belle S. and Martha Washington S. Fifth in the Fantasy S. (G2) and La Troienne S. (G3) in her two races prior to this one, the chestnut miss has now earned $214,761 to go along with an 11-4-0-4 mark.

Bred in Kentucky by Dr. William B. Wilmot and Dr. Joan M. Taylor, Time's Mistress brought $65,000 as a Keeneland November weanling before RNAing at $50,000 in the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. She is out of the winning Doyenne (Deputy Minister), who has since produced an unraced juvenile colt named Cough Drop (Lemon Drop Kid) and an unnamed yearling filly by Not for Love.
