Embossed stamps his authority on Dallas Turf Cup

Gary Tanaka's EMBOSSED (Ire) (Mark of Esteem [Ire]) reveled in the soft ground at Lone Star Park on Monday when rallying for a three-quarters of a length victory in the $200,000 Dallas Turf Cup H. (G3). His score validated the shrewd judgment of trainer Niall O'Callaghan, who scratched his charge from this past Saturday's Louisville H. (G3) in favor of this spot. Garrett Gomez reserved the 4-5 favorite off the pace, then produced him at just the right time to get up a shade comfortably, completing nine furlongs in 1:52 3/5. Embossed returned $3.80, $2.60 and $2.20 while spearheading exotics worth $9.40 (exacta), $24.40 (trifecta) and $88.60 (5-6-4-3 superfecta).

Crested (GB) (Fantastic Light) stalked in the early going, made a move to threaten in the stretch and held second by a neck, giving back $3.60 and $3 as the 2-1 second choice. The 5-1 Waupaca (Forest Wildcat), who waltzed through uncontested splits of :25 3/5, :51 1/5, and 1:15 4/5, kept on for third to pay $2.60. More Than Regal (More Than Ready) hit his best stride late and just missed third by a nose. Major Rhythm (Rhythm), Brego (In Excess [Ire]) and defending champion Trial by Jury (Deputy Minister) rounded out the order of finish.

Embossed was earning his second stakes tally, having captured the Kentucky Cup Turf S. (G3) at Kentucky Downs last September. Group 3-placed in England as a juvenile, the dark bay ridgling was purchased for $483,446 at the 2004 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training sale and transferred to O'Callaghan. Embossed's resume includes a third-place finish in the 2005 Hawthorne Derby (G3), and he was a flying second in the John B. Connally Breeders' Cup Turf H. (G3) two starts back. He was exiting a close fourth in the San Juan Capistrano Invitational H. (G2). Embossed now sports a mark of 23-5-5-2 with a bankroll of $441,254.

Bred by Harron Eakin Farms in Ireland, the five-year-old is out of the Vision mare L-Way First. This is the family of L-Way Win, who was Japan's champion juvenile colt in 1992.
