Lady Belsara proves game in Chicago

At the Moment Stables' LADY BELSARA (Boundary) broke on top in Saturday's $175,000 Chicago Breeders' Cup H. (G3) and led the rest of the way, gamely repelling the bid of Trendy Lady (Unbridled's Song) to win by a half-length. Setting the early splits in :22 3/5, :45 1/5 and 1:09 4/5 under pressure, the S. Matthew Kintz-trained filly drifted out a little through the stretch, but she refused to surrender the advantage, finishing seven furlongs over Arlington Park's Polytrack in 1:23. The four-year-old recorded her first stakes victory, improving her overall mark to 7-4-0-2, and she more than doubled her bankroll to $175,860.

Dismissed as the 8-1 fifth choice, Lady Belsara paid $18.40, $7.60 and $6.60 and keyed the $90 exacta with 2-1 favorite Trendy Lady, who returned $3.80 and $3.60. Dimple Pinch (Smoke Glacken) rallied late for third, another length back at 22-1, and gave back $8.20 while capping the $896 trifecta. The 4-11-7-1 superfecta, with the 6-1 My Chickadee (Pleasant Tap) a neck back in fourth, totaled $5,177. Coolwind (Forest Wildcat) came next and was followed by Modjadji (Pioneering), Bluesbdancing (Golden Gear), Trick's Pic (Favorite Trick), Victorina (Delaware Township) and Cuaba (Smoke Glacken). Travel Team (Danzig) was withdrawn.

A close third in the Fit for a Queen S. at Arlington in her previous outing, Lady Belsara is out of the unraced Wolfendale Island (Unbridled) and has an unnamed 2007 half-brother by Pleasant Tap. Bronze Bell Farm and Partners bred her in Kentucky. This is the female family of 1996 Test S. (G1) victress Capote Belle (Capote) and this year's Santa Ysabel S. (G3) winner Baroness Thatcher (Johannesburg).
