T N T Stud's homebred OUT OF CONTROL (Brz) (Vettori) wore down 4-5 favorite
The Tin Man (Affirmed) in the final yards of Saturday's $250,000
American
Invitational H. (G2), foiling the popular nine-year-old's bid to become the
first three-time winner of the storied turf event.
Trained by Bobby Frankel and ridden by Michael Baze, Out of Control was hung
out wide as he rated off splits of :24 1/5, :48 1/5 and 1:11 4/5. The Tin Man
took command turning for home, but Out of Control loomed up to challenge and
actually gained a narrow advantage in midstretch. The venerable old gelding
fought back bravely and seemed to have contained his younger rival, who was
carrying a mere 113 pounds to The Tin Man's 123. The closer they got to the
wire, the more the weight differential began to tell, and the four-year-old dark
bay managed to get his head in front when it counted. Out of Control stopped the
teletimer in 1:46 4/5 for nine furlongs on the firm turf to earn his first
stakes victory, paying $13.80, $4.60 and $3.40 as the third choice at nearly
6-1.
The Tin Man ran his heart out in defeat, returning $2.60 and $2.10 and ending
the $15.40 exacta ($1). Fast and Furious (Fr) (Singspiel [Ire]) rallied from
last to claim third, just a half-length astern of the gallant runner-up. Sent
off as the longest shot on the board at 35-1, the third-placer gave back $6
while rounding out the $153.20 trifecta (6-3-7) ($1). Becrux (Ity) (Glen Jordan)
checked in fourth, followed by Right Special (Brz) (Special Nash [Ire]) and the
early leader, Willow O Wisp (Misnomer). Lang Field (Langfuhr) was scratched.

Out of Control more than doubled his bankroll to $249,371 while improving his
record to 8-4-2-1. His best previous stakes result was a runner-up effort in the
Grande Premio Presidente da Republica (Brz-G1) last August, his finale in his
native land. Given plenty of time to acclimate to the Northern Hemisphere, he
didn't make his U.S. debut until January, finishing second in a downhill turf
sprint at Santa Anita. Out of Control cleared his first allowance condition in
his next start, and he was exiting a handy score in a second-level allowance on
the Hollywood turf.
The Brazilian-bred is out of Heavenly Dancer (Fitzcarraldo), making him a
half-brother to Brazilian Group 3 queen Notre Dame (Brz) (Royal Academy), who
was second in the Paseana H. in January. Heavenly Dancer is herself a full
sister to Argentinean Group 2 winner Silver Planet and a half-sister to
Argentinean Group 1 winner Alphard (Just in Case).
