Rutherienne wins Boiling Springs via disqualification

Virginia Kraft Payson's homebred RUTHERIENNE (Pulpit) had her number elevated to first in Saturday's $150,000 Boiling Springs S. (G3), winning the 8 1/2-furlong turf affair at Monmouth Park after falling a neck short to Red Birkin (Belong to Me) at the wire. That rival interfered with both Rutherienne and Sharp Susan (Touch Gold) in the stretch, which resulted in the stewards placing Red Birkin third while moving the second and third-place finishers up one position.

Rutherienne, who rated in fifth as Sharp Susan set the early pace in :24 1/5, :47 4/5 and 1:10 4/5, returned $3.60, $2.20 and $2.10 after rallying boldly into the stretch as the 4-5 favorite. Sharp Susan, who was steadied late when bumped and forced out by Red Birkin, paid $3 and $2.10 as the 5-2 second choice. Red Birkin, the 7-2 third choice, stalked the pace in third before seizing the lead at the top of the stretch but could not maintain a straight path through the lane. She gave back $2.10 for the show after finishing in 1:40 3/5 over the firm turf. The exacta totaled $9.20, the trifecta $18.60, and the 1-6-2-4 superfecta, with 28-1 Dinner Break (Tale of the Cat) on the bottom, was $73.80. Full of Ideas (Thunder Gulch) and More Than a Feelin (More Than Ready) rounded out the order of finish. Christies Treasure (Belong to Me) was scratched.

With Joe Bravo in the saddle for the first time, Rutherienne recorded her third straight stakes win, improving her overall mark to five-for-six racing exclusively on turf. The Christophe Clement-trained sophomore filly captured the Cherokee Frolic S. at Calder last season and took the Sugar Plum Time S. in mid-May at Belmont. Her her lone setback was a close fourth in the Appalachian S. in her 2007 debut. In her previous outing, the dark bay lass dead-heated for the win in the Sands Point S. (G3). She's now earned $252,635.

The Kentucky-bred Rutherienne is out of the stakes-winning Ruthian (Rahy). She is a three-quarters sister to the juvenile colt Big Wig (A.P. Indy), who just broke his maiden at Belmont Park last Sunday, and she is a half-sister to an unnamed yearling colt by Vindication.
