River's Prayer crowned in Princess

River's Prayer is now undefeated in 2007 from four starts (Jim Lisa Photos)

Trainer Paula Capestro et al's RIVER'S PRAYER (Devon Lane) took the lead at the head of the stretch and held off a game Shaggy Mane (Bertrando) by a half-length at the wire to eclipse the $500,000 Princess Rooney H. (G1) over the good surface at Calder on Saturday. Breaking alertly and tracking in second under Clinton Potts, the speedy four-year-old made her move in the lane and quickly opened up a lead, but pacesetter Shaggy Mane was not about to let her get the win so easily. The final time for six panels was 1:10 3/5, and the winner was worth $24.80, $9.20 and $6 at 11-1.

"This filly likes to be right up on it early in the race but today she let me settle her down the backside," Potts said. "She seemed to drift a bit around the turn but when she straightened up in the stretch she just turned it on."

Shaggy Mane, the near 5-2 favorite, led through fractions of :21 2/5, :44 2/5 and :57 1/5 in a fine runner-up performance. The second placer paid $4 and $3.60 while completing the $155.60 exacta. G City Gal (Elusive Quality) moved smartly in the lane on the outside but fell a half-length shy of the top prize, settling for third at 9-1. Show was worth $5.60 and the trifecta returned $1,000.60. Maryfield (Elusive Quality) closed to cap the $9,186.20 superfecta at 12-1 and was trailed by Miraculous Miss (Mr. Greeley), Selvatica (Forestry), Nossa Cancao (Brz) (Fast Gold), Dixie Dreamer (Mutakddim), Stolen Prayer (Songandaprayer), Songofthesouth (Concerto), 3-1 second choice Indian Flare (Cherokee Run), Mykindasaint (Saint Ballado) and True and True (Is It True).

River's Prayer earned her seventh stakes tally in here while boosting her career line to 15-8-1-2, $801,958. The gray captured the Las Cienegas H. (G3) two prior and also boasts wins in the Cinderella S., Great Lady M. S., Fleet Treat S., Irish O'Brien S. and California Cup Distaff H.

The winner was bred by Vessels Stallion Farm in California and sold for $15,000 as a yearling at the 2004 Barretts October sale. Going through the ring at Barretts again the following March, she RNA'd for $180,000. River's Prayer was produced by the winning Cozzene mare Cozzy Flyer, who is herself a half-sister to multiple stakes victor and Grade 3-placed Never Round (Never Tabled). Her offspring include a juvenile colt named Packed House (Free House) and a 2007 filly by Forest Wildcat.
