Cosmonaut captures second Arlington

In an encore performance, COSMONAUT (Lemon Drop Kid) led all the way in Saturday's $200,000 Arlington H. (G3), recording his second straight wire-to-wire score in the 1 1/4-mile affair. With stable rider Julien Leparoux in the saddle, the Patrick Biancone-trained gray established moderate splits in :25 2/5, :49 3/5, 1:13 and 1:37 before letting it out a notch into the stretch. He cruised to the finish under a hand ride, hitting the wire 2 1/4 lengths clear while stopping the timer in 2:01 1/5 over the good turf.

Favored at 3-5 in the nine-horse field, the five-year-old paid $3.40, $2.20 and $2.10 to his many backers. Revved Up (Sultry Song) offered a good run for runner-up honors, checking in 2 1/2 lengths clear of third at 9-2, and returned $3.80 and $2.40 while capping the $13.80 exacta. Go Between (Point Given) edged I Believe in Me (Giant's Causeway) by a neck for the show at 7-2 and gave back $2.60. The trifecta totaled $28, and the 8-1-4-10 superfecta was $149. Gray Suitor (Maria's Mon), Lord Carmen (Ordway), Meadow Vespers (Meadow Prayer), Murch (Mr. Greeley) and Come on Jazz (Jambalaya Jazz) rounded out the order of finish following the defections of Cloudy's Knight (Lord Avie) and Green Lemon (Lemon Drop Kid).

Bred by Patricia Pavlish in Kentucky, Cosmonaut was purchased for $105,000 at the 2003 Keeneland September sale. The Flying Zee Stables colorbearer hails from the Grade 2-placed Cosmic Fire (Capote), who is also the dam of a 2007 half-sister by Grand Slam. Cosmonaut earned his first stakes victory in last year's Golden Gate Fields H. (G3), and he turned in two solid efforts this season prior to Saturday, finishing second in the Dixie S. (G2) two starts back and fourth, beaten only three-quarters of a length, in the Manhattan H. (G1) most recently. He's now earned $700,557 from a 24-6-4-1 line.

The August 11 Arlington Million (G1) is next for Cosmonaut.
