Lattice lands American Derby Claiborne Farm and Adele B. Dilschneider's homebred LATTICE (Arch) rallied best of all to claim Saturday's $250,000 American Derby (G2) by three-quarters of a length. In the opening stages, the Bill Mott pupil raced in midpack off fractions of :23, :47 1/5 and 1:11 3/5, and ranged into contention beneath Robby Albarado in the stretch. Lattice then struck top gear, collaring the pacesetting Lovango (Capote) and driving to a decisive score in the second leg of the Mid-America Triple for sophomores. The dark bay colt stopped the teletimer in 1:54 4/5 for 1 3/16 miles on Arlington Park's good turf. Dispatched as the 7-2 third choice, he furnished mutuels of $9.40, $5 and $4.20. Going Ballistic (Lite the Fuse) made eye-catching progress from far back to snare runner-up honors, paying $7.20 and $5 at odds of 8-1. It was another 1 1/4 lengths back to Eighteenthofmarch (Wild Event), who held third by a neck. The 56-1 longshot gave back $9.80 to show. Pleasant Strike (Smart Strike), the 8-5 favorite who had taken the series-opening Arlington Classic S. (G3), ran evenly for fourth. The exotics totaled $68 (exacta), $1,481.60 (trifecta) and $6,598.40 (4-3-9-1 superfecta). Irish invader Perfect Casting (Diesis [GB]) faded to fifth, followed by Lovango, Sumac (Crafty Prospector), Quasicobra (Wild Rush) and Self Made Man (Catienus). Lattice nearly tripled his bankroll to $219,699 while advancing his mark to 5-3-1-0. His lone unplaced effort was a respectable fourth in the Jefferson Cup S. (G2) in his stakes debut last time out. Bred in Kentucky, Lattice is out of the Rahy mare Lateral, who has also produced stakes victress Cross (Mighty) as well as an unnamed yearling full sister to the winner. Lateral comes from the rich female family of champion Slew O' Gold (Seattle Slew), 1979 Belmont S. (G1) victor Coastal (Majestic Prince), Grade 1 heroine Sleep Easy (Seattle Slew) and multiple Grade 1 king Aptitude (A.P. Indy), among others.
