Sun Boat steams past San Diego rivals

Bongo Racing Stable, Capen and Tjosvold's SUN BOAT (GB) (Machiavellian) was last as the field approached the top of the lane but inhaled his rivals with a stirring late rush over the Polytrack at Del Mar to capture the $300,000 San Diego H. (G2) on Saturday. Trained by Mike Mitchell and ridden by Michael Baze, the five-year-old was always at the rear through the early going as 3-2 favorite Buzzards Bay (Marco Bay) got three-quarters in 1:14. Sun Boat began to accelerate nearing the final turn, weaving his way through traffic in the lane en route to posting a one-length win, stopping the teletimer in 1:45 1/5 for the 1 1/16 miles. Sun Boat paid $15, $7.20 and $5 at 6-1 and started the $1 exotics: $39.60 exacta, $632 trifecta and $4,349.30 superfecta (9-7-2-4).

Awesome Gem (Awesome Again) loomed as a huge threat turning for home but could not match strides with the surging winner late, settling for the place at 5-1. The runner-up paid $5.40 and $4.40. Salty Humor (Distorted Humor) closed on the outside to be a clear third another two lengths back, good for $10.40 at 37-1. Raise the Bluff (Pine Bluff) completed the super at 24-1 while 1 3/4 lengths back and was followed by Heatseeker (Ire) (Giant's Causeway), 7-2 second choice Arson Squad (Brahms), Soul City Slew (Slew City Slew), Buzzards Bay and C'mon Tiger (Storm Cat).

Sun Boat has had a career resurrection since switching to synthetic racing, winning two of three outings and finishing a game second by a nose in the Californian S. (G2) most recently. Claimed for $50,000 three starts prior, the gelding boosted his career bankroll to $314,345 from a 12-4-3-1 career line.

The winner was bred in Great Britain by Meon Valley Stud and attracted a bid of $906,255 at the 2003 Tattersalls Yearling sale. Sun Boat was produced from 1998 Juddmonte International S. (Eng-G1) heroine One So Wonderful (Nashwan), the highweight older mare in England and Ireland in 1998, and a half-sister to Group 3 winners Relatively Special (GB) (Alzao) and Alnasr Alwasheek (GB) (Sadler's Wells), as well as stakes winner Raucous Lad (Warning [GB]). Sun Boat's granddam is One in a Million (Rarity), winner of the 1979 One Thousand Guineas (Eng-G1) on her way to being named champion three-year-old that same season. One in a Million left her mark in the breeding shed also, producing multiple Group 1 victress Milligram (GB) (Mill Reef).
