Subtle Aly scores in Schuylerville

IEAH Stables and Alan Pesch's SUBTLE ALY (French Envoy) just got her nose down on the line to take Wednesday's opening day feature at Saratoga, the $111,000 Schuylerville S. (G3), with jockey Edgar Prado aboard. The Richard Dutrow Jr.-trained chestnut broke her maiden for conditioner Steve Asmussen on June 23 at Churchill Downs by five lengths, setting a new track record of :50 2/5 for 4 1/2 furlongs in the process. She was then privately purchased by her current connections and transferred to Dutrow.

I Promise (Hook and Ladder) quickly moved up to take the lead, setting early splits of :22 and :45 2/5 while tracked by first Lady Chace (Tiznow) and then Blitzing (Montbrook). Subtle Aly, in the meantime, was recovering from stumbling out of the gate and being bumped early in the race. She moved up along the inside around the turn, then circled I Promise in the stretch, getting up by a half-length through five furlongs in :57 3/5. I Promise wasn't done, though, coming back along the rail to challenge for it all. It took a photo to determine the winner, with Subtle Aly getting the bob on the line to stop the clock in 1:11 on the fast dirt.

Blitzing closed well to be just a neck back third and was followed by 2-1 favorite According to Plan (Out of Place), Dicey D J (Milwaukee Brew), Lady Chace, Dreabons Legacy (Proud Citizen) and Yes By West (Yes It's True). New York City Girl (Forest Camp) was scratched.

Subtle Aly paid $10.20, $5.70 and $4 as the 4-1 third choice while keying the $106 exacta and $512 trifecta (5-2-8). I Promise was game in defeat, returning $9 and $5.60 as the 11-1 sixth pick in the eight-horse field, while Blitzing was worth $4.10 at 4-1.

Subtle Aly was a bargain for her previous owners, selling for only $3,000 as a yearling at the 2006 OBS January Sale, and increased her earnings to $91,028 with the winner's share here. She is the most recent registered foal out of the winning Aly Sweet (Alydar), who is herself out of 1987 Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) queen Very Subtle (Hoist the Silver). Very Subtle has also produced stakes winner and multiple Grade 3-placed Dianehill (Ire) (Danehill).
