Lewis Michael sails in Washington Park Frank C. Calabrese's homebred LEWIS MICHAEL (Rahy) proved much the best in Saturday's $300,000 Washington Park H. (G2) at Arlington, notching his first graded victory with a 4 3/4-length decision. Content to race a close second as Throng (Silver Deputy) set the early pace in :24 3/5, :48 3/5 and 1:12 3/5 over the Polytrack, Lewis Michael advanced to the lead on the far turn and easily drew off into the stretch, eventually completing 1 3/16 miles in 1:55. The 4-5 favorite paid $3.80, $3 and $2.10. Mustanfar (Unbridled) finished a clear second at 6-1 and gave back $5.20 and $3.20. A. P. Arrow (A.P. Indy), the 3-1 second choice, edged Throng by a neck for third and returned $2.40. The exotics yielded $23 (exacta), $65.20 (trifecta) and $277.20 (2-7-4-5 superfecta). High Blues (High Yield), Save Big Money (Storm Cat) and Minister's Joy (Deputy Minister) came next under the wire. Real Dandy (Yankee Victor) was scratched. Bred in the Bluegrass State, Lewis Michael hails from the classy, multiple stakes-winning mare Justenuffheart (Broad Brush) and counts reigning champion two-year-old filly Dreaming of Anna, winner of last weekend's Virginia Oaks, as a full sister. He also has an unraced juvenile half-brother named Justenuffhumor (Distorted Humor) and a yearling half-sister by Unbridled's Song. His 12-year-old dam is a half-sister to champion Kitten's Joy (El Prado [Ire]) and Grade 2 victress Precious Kitten (Catienus). Lewis Michael won the 2005 Grand Canyon S. and has finished second in four graded events: the Peter Pan S. (G2) and Perryville S. (G3) in 2006, and the Commonwealth Breeders' Cup S. (G2) and Hanshin Cup H. (G3) this season. The bay colt also finished third in last year's Tropical Park Derby (G3). Lewis Michael has now earned $568,014 from a 18-6-6-2 line. His mark on Polytrack is 5-2-3-0.
