Passified rolls late in San Clemente

Forging Oaks Farm's PASSIFIED (GB) (Compton Place) moved to the outside of pacesetter Fleet Caroline (Tejano Run) in midstretch and powered home a half-length winner of the $150,000 San Clemente H. (G2) over the firm Del Mar turf on Saturday. The James Cassidy trainee broke well and saved ground on the inside as Fleet Caroline was clear through splits of :21 3/5 and :46 2/5 for the opening half-mile. Heading into the final turn the leader was still traveling well, reaching six panels in 1:10 2/5, but Mike Smith began to angle Passified into striking position and the filly took over from there, completing the one-mile grass feature in 1:34. Sent off at 6-1, the winner gave back $15, $7 and $4.60.

Fleet Caroline gave a good account of herself in making her stakes bow, staying on well for place while one-length clear of her nearest pursuer. The runner-up paid $10.80 and $6.80 while completing the $80.10 exacta ($1) at nearly 10-1. Spenditallbaby (Unusual Heat) rallied belatedly to earn third at 7-1. Show paid $4.60 and the winning trifecta returned $437.90 ($1). Mostbeautifulstorm (Storm Boot) capped the $4,378.20 superfecta ($1) (3-11-10-2) at nearly 15-1 and was followed by 6-5 choice Super Freaky (Smart Strike), Pinata (Vision and Verse), Diva's Seastar (Broken Vow), Tremendous One (Point Given), La Tee (Broken Vow) and Private Dreams (Johannesburg). Eclisse (Fr) (Ski Chief) was scratched and Honnete (Elusive Quality) didn't draw in from the also-eligible list.

Passified earned her second consecutive stakes win, third in total, and she upped her career bankroll to $323,070 from an 11-5-1-1 line. The chestnut scored in the China Doll S. and Flawlessly S., with placings in the Providencia S. (G3) and Senorita S. (G3).

The winner was bred in Great Britain by The Lavington Stud and attracted a bid of $245,726 at the 2006 Tattersalls Horses in Training sale. She is out of the winning Passiflora (Night Shift) and has a juvenile half-sister named Red Amaryllis (Piccolo).
