Nashoba's Key overcomes adversity to take Hirsch Warren Williamson's homebred NASHOBA'S KEY (Silver Hawk) found room in the stretch to bag the $294,000 Clement L. Hirsch H. (G2) over the Polytrack at Del Mar on Sunday. Settled at the back of the four-horse contingent early, the four-year-old lass steadily advanced along the rail on the far turn but was hemmed inside and had to wait for room until the quartet straightened in the lane. Deftly angled out by jockey Joe Talamo, the bay responded in a big way, collaring a clear Bai and Bai (Falstaff) late to win going away, completing 1 1/16 miles in a pedestrian 1:48 1/5. The final margin at the wire was 1 1/2 lengths, and the Carla Gaines trainee was sent off as the prohibitive 1-2 choice to pay $3 and $2.10. Bai and Bai ran a big one to secure the second slot, paying $5 and completing the $11 exacta ($1) at nearly 14-1. Balance (Thunder Gulch) made a strong move approaching the final turn but flattened out late, settling for the show as the 3-2 second betting option and completing the $17.90 trifecta (1-4-3) ($1). River Savage (Brz) (First American), the leader for the opening six furlongs, was last, while Tough Tiz's Sis (Tiznow) and Somethinaboutlaura (Dance Floor) were withdrawn. Nashoba's Key kept her record intact from six career outings, boosting her bankroll to $623,460 in the process. The talented four-year-old captured the Vanity Invitational H. (G1), Milady Breeders' Cup H. (G2) and Fran's Valentine prior to to her score here. The winner was bred in the Golden State and is the first foal produced from the multiple-winning Nashoba (Ire) (Caerleon). Nashoba's Key has a pair of unnamed half-siblings by In Excess (Ire), a two-year-old filly and a yearling colt.
