Dixieland Band pensioned from stud duty

DIXIELAND BAND (Northern Dancer), sire of 115 stakes winners with progeny earnings in excess of $73.7 million, has been pensioned from stud duties at Mr. and Mrs. William S. Farish's Lane's End Farm near Versailles, Kentucky. Though his overall health and fertility are good, the effects of arthritis prompted his retirement.

Bred and raced by Mrs. Farish's mother, Mrs. Bayard Sharp, the 28-year-old Dixieland Band was one of the original three stallions to enter stud at Lane's End following his retirement from racing in 1985. Compiling a record of 24-8-3-4, $441,320, Dixieland Band won four stakes including the 1983 Pennsylvania Derby (G2) and 1984 Massachusetts H. (G2).

Produced by 1977 Matchmaker S. (G1) winner Mississippi Mud (Delta Judge), Dixieland Band sired such Grade 1 winners as Italian highweight and two-time Ascot Gold Cup winner (Eng-G1) Drum Taps; Dixie Union, who is currently the co-leading juvenile sire by number of 2008 stakes winners and also stands at Lane's End; Canadian champion Cotton Carnival; French classic winner Egyptband; Spinning Round; Dixie Brass; and Grade 1 queen Sharp Lisa. In 2008, during Keeneland's fall meet, Dixieland Band was represented by Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (G1) winner Alwajeeha.

As a broodmare sire, Dixieland Band has been represented by 120 stakes winners with $116 million in earnings. He was the leading broodmare sire in 2004 and the leading active broodmare sire in North America in 2008 and 2007. He is responsible for a pair of Kentucky Derby (G1) winners: Monarchos in 2000 and Street Sense in 2007.

Dixieland Band will remain at Lane's End.
