Distorted Humor colt brings $1.5 million A colt by Distorted Humor, Hip No. 177, sold for $1.5 million at Tuesday's Barretts March Sale Selected Two-Year-Olds in Training in Pomona, California. WinStar Farm, which stands Distorted Humor in Kentucky, purchased the youngster from the consignment of Jerry Bailey Sales Agency, agent. Named COWTOWN CAT, the chestnut worked one furlong in :10 1/5 at the first under tack preview at Fairplex Park on March 5. He previously sold for $135,000 at last year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The sale topper is the first foal out of the winning Storm Cat mare Tom's Cat. His second dam, stakes winner and Grade 3-placed Shouldnt Say Never (Meadowlake), is a half-sister to 1995 Sorority S. (G3) heroine Crafty But Sweet (Crafty Prospector) and multiple stakes winners Stutz Keys (Stutz Blackhawk) and Captain Maestri (Dynaformer). A colt by Exploit, Hip 47, fetched $1.2 million from Zayat Stables LLC. Consigned by Murray Smith, agent, the dark bay is the first foal out of the multiple stakes-placed Carson Jen (Carson City), a half-sister to stakes-placed Marquesa Jen (Marquetry). His third dam, stakes winner Robertina (Roberto), a half-sister to stakes winner Jubilous (Sir Ivor), is out of 1977 Acorn S. (G1) winner Bring out the Band (One for All). The Kentucky-bred worked a quarter-mile in :21 1/5 at the first under tack preview. Smith purchased the colt for $100,000 at last year's Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's August Yearling Sale. Zayat also purchased Hip 41, a filly by Distorted Humor, for $700,000. Consigned by Jerry Bailey Sales Agency, agent, the lass is a half-sister to stakes-placed Purgatory (Devil's Bag) and out of the unraced Phone Trick mare Bridge to Cross, a full sister to stakes-winning, stakes producer Pink Shoes and a half-sister to stakes-winning Tour (Forty Niner), who is herself the dam of recent John Battaglia Memorial S. hero Laity (Pulpit) and three-time Grade 3 victress Trip (Lord at War [Arg]). Named UNDERCOVER ANGEL, the chestnut filly worked an eighth-mile in a bullet :10 at the March 5 under tack preview. Hip 17, CALL ZOLL (Richter Scale), fetched the third-highest price, selling for $825,000 to John Sadler, agent. Consigned by B.C.3. Thoroughbreds, agent for Timberline, the bay colt is a full brother to the 2004 My Dear S. winner, Quite a Ruckus. He is out of the winning Bold Ruckus mare Ada Ruckus, who is a full sister to stakes-winning, stakes producer Celmis and a half-sister to stakes winner Tethra (Cure the Blues). His second dam is Canadian juvenile filly champion Ada Prospect (New Prospect). At the first under tack preview, the colt worked a quarter-mile in a bullet :20 4/5. He previously sold for $85,000 at last year's Keeneland September auction. The sales company reported 93 horses sold for $14,361,000, an increase of $500 over last year when 88 horses brought an aggregate of $14,360,500. The average price declined 5.4 percent, from $163,188 to $154,419, while the median price dropped 15.8 percent, from $95,000 to $80,000. There were 46 horses not sold this year, compared to 57 in 2005.
