Super Saver rings up first winner at Belmont Park

Kentucky Derby hero Super Saver was represented by his first winner when I Spent It captured his debut in Belmont Park's 3RD race on Wednesday.

Under Javier Castellano, the Kentucky-bred rallied from third to win by three parts of a length in a time of :58 for five furlongs on a fast track. Bred by Dixiana, the colt is owned by Alex and JoAnn Lieblong and is trained by Tony Dutrow. I Spent It earned $45,000 for the victory.

Super Saver broke his maiden second time out as a juvenile for Todd Pletcher, flashing high speed to win in a seven-length romp at Belmont Park. Although the WinStar Farm homebred tired to fourth next time in the Champagne, he rebounded with a vengeance in the 2009 Kentucky Jockey Club. Super Saver not only roared five lengths clear, but did so in a stakes-record 1:42.83 for the 1 1/16-mile test at Churchill Downs.

A similar pattern unfolded in the spring of 2010, with Super Saver performing creditably in defeat before saving his best for Churchill Downs. The son of Maria's Mon opened his sophomore campaign with a close third in the Tampa Bay Derby, and took a slight step forward when missing narrowly in the Arkansas Derby. Super Saver improved again in the Kentucky Derby, reveling in the sloppy track and drawing off by 2 ½ lengths.

Super Saver ran well below his best in his three remaining starts in the Preakness, Haskell Invitational and Travers, and signed off with a mark of 10-3-2-1, $1,889,766.

The seven-year-old Super Saver hails from one of the most illustrious families in the stud book. His dam, Supercharger, is a Phipps Stable homebred who went to WinStar for $160,000 as a broodmare at Keeneland November -- when she was carrying Super Saver. She has since produced Grade 3 victor Brethren and stakes-placed Lisa T.

A winning daughter of A.P. Indy, Supercharger is a full sister to Grade 1 star Girolamo, Grade 2 heroine Daydreaming (dam of Grade 1 victor Imagining) and Grade 3 scorer Accelerator. Yet another full sibling, the unraced She's a Winner, is the dam of Grade 1-winning millionaire and sire Bluegrass Cat, runner-up in the 2006 Kentucky Derby, Belmont and Travers.

Supercharger is a daughter of Grade 3 victress Get Lucky, who is in turn a full sister to champion Rhythm and to stakes-placed Not for Love, the broodmare sire of current Kentucky Derby and Preakness hero California Chrome.

Super Saver's third dam, Grade 1 diva Dance Number, is a noted producer herself, with such descendants as successful sire Mutakddim and Grade 1-winning sire Frost Giant. Super Saver's fourth dam is champion Numbered Account, whose offspring include Private Account. This is the maternal line of the celebrated *La Troienne, of whom Super Saver carries several strains.

Super Saver stands at WinStar near Versailles, Kentucky, for $17,500, stands and nurses.
