Silver Deputy euthanized at 29 Influential sire Silver Deputy was euthanized last Saturday due to the infirmities of old age, it was announced Monday. A pensioner since 2008, the 29-year-old resided at Fred Seitz's Brookdale Farm near Versailles, Kentucky, where he was buried. Silver Deputy was from the first crop of two-time leading sire Deputy Minister. Purchased for $200,000 by Windfields Farm at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July, he captured both of his outings as a juvenile in dominating fashion at Woodbine. The Mac Benson pupil romped by 6 1/2 lengths in a sprint maiden and followed up with a 3 1/2-length decision in the Swynford Stakes. Unfortunately, the exciting prospect then suffered a career-ending knee injury. Retired to stud at Windfields Farm in Ontario, Canada, for an initial fee of $2,500 in 1989, he became an immediate sensation with his first crop to race, finishing a close runner-up to Forty Niner on the 1992 North American Freshman Sire List. He was then moved to Brookdale Farm where he spent the remainder of his career. His stud fee rose to $75,000 in 2000, by which point he had ranked among the leading North American sires in 1998 and 1999. Silver Deputy sired 694 winners of more than $88 million, including seven champions and 88 stakes winners. His leading progeny include Hall of Famer Silverbulletday, an Eclipse Award winner in her division at both two and three, as well as Canadian champions Archers Bay, Deputy Imes, Deputy Jane West, Scotzanna, Poetically and Larkwhistle. Silver Deputy has already exerted an influence through his sons and daughters. His sons at stud include 2007 Leading North American Freshman Sire Posse, Spring at Last, Badge of Silver and Archers Bay. Silver Deputy factors as the broodmare sire of two-time champion female sprinter Groupie Doll; Japanese classic winner Oken Bruce Lee; Roman Ruler; El Corredor; and Wiseman's Ferry, sire of reigning two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan. Out of the stakes-winning Mr. Prospector mare Silver Valley, Silver Deputy was a full brother to Life Out There, dam of two-time Japan Cup Dirt champion Kane Hekili.
