Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) hero ARTIE SCHILLER (El Prado [Ire]) has been retired and will enter stud in 2007 at Hurricane Hall near Lexington, Kentucky, for a fee of $15,000, live foal. Trained throughout his career by James Jerkens, the five-year-old bay compiled a record of 22-10-5-3 with $2,088,853 in earnings for his owners, William Entenmann's Timber Bay Farm and Mrs. Thomas J. Walsh.

In addition to the 2005 Breeders' Cup Mile, Artie Schiller captured a total of six other stakes races. Last season, he won the Maker's Mark Mile S. (G2) at Keeneland and Bernard Baruch H. (G2) at Saratoga. As a three-year-old in 2004, he set a new course record at Belmont Park when romping in the Jamaica H. (G2), and also scored in the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame H. (G2), Hill Prince S. (G3) and Woodlawn S. Artie Schiller's resume lists seven stakes-placed efforts, including the 2005 Manhattan H. (G1), Dixie S. (G2) and Kelso Breeders' Cup H. (G2).

Artie Schiller raced three times in 2006. After just missing by a nose when attempting to defend his Maker's Mark title, he finished a close third in the Dixie. The bay retreated to finish an uncharacteristic fourth in the August 6 Fourstardave H. (G2) at Saratoga in what turned out to be his final outing.

Bred in Kentucky by Haras du Mezeray S.A., Artie Schiller was produced by multiple Grade 1 queen Hidden Light (Majestic Light). He hails from a productive female line whose most recent headliner is unbeaten stakes-winning juvenile Marcavelly (Johannesburg), himself out of a full sister to Hidden Light.

"Artie Schiller is an elite miler," said Ben P. Walden Jr., president of Hurricane Hall, adding that his recruit "is an outstanding physical specimen and at a $15,000 fee will give breeders a real chance."

The bay will stand as the property of a syndicate.
