Showing Up rolls in Jamaica

Lael Stable's SHOWING UP (Strategic Mission) rated off dueling pacesetters, took a short lead turning for home and showed his class with a stellar late charge to take the $300,000 Jamaica Breeders' Cup H. (G2) at Belmont by 3 1/2 lengths on Saturday. Breaking alertly but rated strongly by Cornelio Velasquez, the sophomore turf star sat behind moderate splits of :25 1/5, :49 3/5 and 1:12 4/5 for the opening six panels over the good inner turf. As the field turned for home, Outperformance (Aptitude) was in full gear and appeared to be going on, but Showing Up got his cue and it was over in the matter of a few jumps. The final time for the 1 1/8 miles was 1:47 4/5, and the heavily bet winner paid $2.90, $2.20 and $2.10 while topping the $8.70 exacta and $30.80 trifecta at 2-5 for trainer Barclay Tagg.

"When Outperformance came up alongside of him," Tagg said, "he kicked in beautifully. I loved his race."

Outperformance was very sharp in the runner-up spot as the 9-2 second choice, paying $4.10 and $3.20. Spider Power (Ire) (Royal Applause [GB]) closed belatedly to garner show honors another two lengths back at 14-1, worth $3.80, and was trailed by Devil's Preacher (Pulpit), Kiss The Kid (Lemon Drop Kid), Presious Passion (Royal Anthem), Carnera (Old Trieste) and Irish Osprey (Arch). Kip Deville (Kipling) and Oedipus O'Neal (Freud) were withdrawn.

Showing Up continues to improve upon his fantastic season, upping his earnings to $1,310,500 from an 8-6-0-1 career mark, all in 2006. The chestnut colt owns wins in the Secretariat S. (G1), Lexington S. (G2) and Colonial Turf Cup S., with a placing in the Man o' War S. (G1).

Bred in Kentucky by Nellie Cox and Rose Retreat Farm, the winner brought the gavel down at $60,000 at the 2005 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale. Produced from the winning Miss Alethia (T. V. Commercial), the winner was preceded in stakes glory by his half-brother Gimmeawink (Elusive Quality), a six-time stakes hero, and also counts as a half-sister an unnamed yearling by Proud Citizen.

Tagg also noted after the race that Showing Up would likely be sent to the $500,000 Hollywood Derby (G1) on November 26.
