Aqueduct cancels after second spill in three days

Aqueduct officials canceled live racing after Saturday's 5TH race at the Ozone Park, New York, track following a spill involving jockeys Eddie Martin Jr. and Norberto Arroyo Jr. Officials have also canceled Sunday's card due to inclement weather and have rescheduled the $65,000 Correction H. to February 11.

Arroyo and Cadillac Cruiser (Touch Gold) were on the lead in the 1 1/16-mile claiming event over Aqueduct's inner dirt when the five-year-old gelding took a bad step coming out of the turn, fractured his right front leg and fell to the track. Jimmy O (Stormy Atlantic), with Martin aboard, couldn't avoid the downed horse and fell over Cadillac Cruiser.

Arroyo was taken to nearby Jamaica Hospital to be treated for a bruised eye and injured left shoulder. Martin was uninjured in what turned out to be his second spill in three days.

Cadillac Cruiser was euthanized. Jimmy O suffered a fatal neck injury.

On Thursday in the 8TH race, Martin's mount fell over Are We Dreamin (Yes It's True), who couldn't avoid For a Prayer (Songandaprayer) when she broke down and fell right in Are We Dreamin's path. Martin also escaped injury in that one, but jockeys Jose Santos and Ramon Dominguez were sent to the hospital. Dominguez suffered an injured right knee and will miss at least two weeks. Santos fractured his spine and ribs, and will be out indefinitely.

"He broke his breastbone, which is why he had so much trouble breathing," said Santos' wife, Rita. "He broke the T-7 and T-8 vertebrae and pieces of the T-7 are pressing the spinal cord. He is being fitted for a brace, and there is no way to tell how long he will be in it.

"Dr. Ronald Light, Jose's own doctor, is en route from Florida and we'll know more later on. We feel better that Jose has his own team of doctors together on this."
