Travers S. (G1) winner AFLEET EXPRESS (Afleet Alex) has been retired and will

stand the 2011 season at the Beck family's Gainesway Farm. The announcement was

made Wednesday.

In September, while preparing for the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1), it was

revealed that Afleet Express had a suffered a small tear in the upper suspensory

ligament of his left foreleg and would be sidelined the rest of the year. While

initial reports suggested he would return to the track at four, those plans have

now changed.

Trained by Jimmy Jerkens, Afleet Express won his maiden debut at Aqueduct

last December, then ran second and fifth against allowance foes before passing

his first-level condition at Belmont Park by 7 3/4 lengths. He next made his

stakes debut in the June 19 Pegasus S. (G3) at Monmouth Park, winning by 1 3/4

lengths, then ran third in the Jim Dandy S. (G2). Afleet Express rebounded to

take the August 28 Travers by a nose after a thrilling stretch battle with Fly

Down (Mineshaft).

Afleet Express retires with a mark of 7-4-1-1, $835,140.

"Afleet Express exemplifies the very best qualities in the Thoroughbred race

horse, and of the Afleet Alex progeny in particular," Gainesway President and

CEO Antony Beck said. "The Travers victory, at the American classic distance of

1 1/4 miles, when Afleet Express just would not be denied, showed his class and

courage under fire. But he also won his two-year-old debut in New York going

away, at six furlongs. And equally important, around the barn he has a

tremendously calm temperament and demeanor, which is representative of his

sire's progeny. We are very excited to be standing this outstanding stud

prospect."

A stud fee will be announced at a later date.

Bred in Kentucky by McMillan Brothers and James Devaney, Afleet Express was a

$245,000 Keeneland January yearling. He's out of the stakes-placed Expanse

(Distant View), who is also the dam of multiple stakes winner and 2007 Illinois

Derby (G2) runner-up Reporting for Duty (Deputy Commander) as well as a yearling

colt by Tiznow. The mare is a half-sibling to Grade 2 victor Eye of the Tiger

(American Chance) and stakes-winning heroine Wildwood Flower (Langfuhr). Other

notables in this female family include Grade 1 hero Snow Ridge (Tabasco Cat),

Grade 2 winner Sweetnorthernsaint (Sweetsouthernsaint) and multiple Grade 3

scorer Fighting Fantasy (Fighting Fit).
