Algorithms scratched from Fountain of Youth

Starlight Racing's undefeated Algorithms, the 8-5 favorite in Sunday's Grade

2 Fountain of Youth, has been scratched from the race due to a popped splint in

his right front leg.

Jack Wolf of Starlight Racing and trainer Todd Pletcher both issued

statements on the situation.

"It's disappointing," Wolf said. "Unfortunately, these things are part of the

game, and we deal with them."

"The colt has been training beautifully," Pletcher said. "It's an unfortunate situation. We'll monitor him closely and see how

he responds."

Pletcher will still be represented in Gulfstream Park's feature by unbeaten

Discreet Dancer, who will be ridden by John Velazquez.

Algorithms burst onto the Kentucky Derby scene by comprehensively defeating

previously unbeaten champion Hansen, winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, in

the Grade 3 Holy Bull at Gulfstream on January 29.

Jockey Javier Castellano made the choice to stick with Algorithms in the

Fountain of Youth, giving up the mount on Union Rags. The beneficiary of that

decision was Julien Leparoux, who got the call to ride Union Rags, now the

likely favorite.
