Sham S. (G3) winner ALPHIE'S BET (Tribal Rule) tops a field of eight in

Saturday's $200,000

Snow Chief

S., the main event on the 11th California Gold Rush program at

Hollywood Park.

Restricted to California-breds, the Gold Rush features eight stakes races with

purses

totaling $910,000.

Trained by Alexis Barba, Alphie's Bet had designs on the May 1 Kentucky Derby

(G1) at Churchill

Downs, but his hopes were dashed with an off-the-board finish in the Santa Anita

Derby (G1).

The bay colt was sixth in that April 3 affair, 8 1/4 lengths behind wire-to-wire

winner

Sidney's Candy (Candy Ride [Arg]).

Barba is hoping for a smoother trip this time for Alphie's Bet than he had in

the nine-furlong Santa Anita Derby.

"He just had a rough trip; he ran a mile and a quarter," said Barba in reference to

her charge being carried very wide in the race.

Barba named Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith to replace Alex Solis aboard

Alphie's Bet. Solis, who has shifted his tack to Kentucky, rode the colt in his

last four starts. Smith rode him in his first two. Alphie's Bet will break from post 2 and carry

the highweight of 124 pounds.

Drawn directly inside of Alphie's Bet in the Snow Chief is the John

Sadler's-trained SELF MADE (Old Topper). Self Made will enter the 1 1/8-mile

test perfect from two career starts. He rallied from last to win against maidens

going six furlongs on February

21, then

successfully stretched out to 1 1/16 miles on April 1. Rafael Bejarano, fresh

off another

meet title in Southern California at Santa Anita, will ride.

The other races on Saturday with six digit purses are the $150,000

Melair S. for

three-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles, the $150,000

B. Thoughtful

S. sending older fillies

and mares 7 1/2 furlongs and the $150,000

Tiznow S. for older horses

sprinting 7 1/2 furlongs.

LA NEZ (Storm Creek) will be making her second start of the year in the

Melair following a second in the Santa Paula S. (G3) on

March

28 at Santa Anita. Trained by Eric Kruljac, the

dark bay lass has won two of five starts when

facing Cal-breds and scored her biggest victory in the California Cup Juvenile Fillies

last October

during the Oak Tree meet at Santa Anita.

Smith, who was aboard for the Cal Cup win, retains the mount on La Nez, who drew

post

2 in the field of seven and will carry co-highweight -- along with CAMILLE C

(Roman Dancer) -- of

120

pounds.

Only five have been entered to go in the B. Thoughtful S., and U R

ALL THAT I AM (Valid Wager) will be seeking her seventh win in 14

starts

for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

The winner of the Cat's Cradle H. in her lone try at Hollywood Park, U R

All

That I Am was beaten by a head in the Irish O'Brien S. on turf in her most recent

outing on

March 20. She drew post four and will carry 120 pounds under Joel Rosario.

Eight are scheduled to participate in the Tiznow, including defending champion

LIBERIAN FREIGHTER (Bertrando). The

Neil Drysdale trainee won the Tiznow by 1 1/2 lengths as the 5-2

favorite in 2009 and closed out the year with a close fourth in the Ack Ack H.

(G3). He switched to the turf to begin his five-year-old season, posting another

close fourth against allowance rivals, before finishing fifth in the February 28

Crystal Water H. last out.

Bejarano, who has ridden Liberian Freighter to his last two wins, stays with the

gelding,

who will leave from the rail.

The other Gold Rush stakes are the $60,000

Alphabet Kisses

S. for maiden fillies

and mares

at six furlongs, the $70,000

Grey Memo

S. sending three-year-olds and up seven furlongs,

the

$70,000

Warren's Thoroughbreds

S. for fillies and mares going seven furlongs and the

$60,000 NTRA

S. for maidens sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs.
