KING OF HAPPINESS (Spinning World) appears to be the class of Sunday's
$250,000 American H. (G2) at Hollywood Park and we can't go against the talented
chestnut despite his 9-5 morning-line favorite status. Trained by Neil Drysdale,
the six-year-old earned a nose win in the Inglewood H. (G3) in his seasonal
debut, then returned last out to just miss by a half-length in the Shoemaker
Breeders' Cup Mile S. (G1). He earned a nice 104 BRIS Speed rating for that last
effort and owns both speed and a late kick, which should prove enough to take
this 1 1/8-mile grass test. Patrick Valenzuela in the saddle only improves his
chances.
FAST AND FURIOUS (Fr) (Singspiel [Ire]) has done well since coming to the
United States last fall and could offer a challenge for it all here under Victor
Espinoza. The dark bay has yet to break through with a win, but has been close
in all three starts, finishing third in the Shoemaker most recently. He earned a
101 Speed figure for that one, and the Ron McAnally-trained four-year-old could
finally capture that elusive first U.S. score on Sunday.
QSAR (Ger) (Tiger Hill) scored in his first U.S. start last out, taking an
optional-claimer by three parts of a length after tracking the pace. Conditioned
by Bobby Frankel, the bay four-year-old owns five wins from eight grass races
and could improve that figure under John Velazquez in this spot.
HE'S CRAFTY (Crafty Prospector) could add some value to the exotics is he
goes off anywhere near his 20-1 morning-line odds. The Wesley Ward charge is
moving up in class here, coming off a claiming-race victory, but owns the
numbers to get the job done. The six-year-old chestnut has also been working
well of late and might have enough to make a race of it. Rene Douglas has the
call.
LAURA'S LUCKY BOY (Theatrical [Ire]) will be making his second start for
Richard Mandella here and will need to improve drastically off a ninth in the
Maker's Mark Mile (G2) last out. The four-year-old owns the talent to do just
that, as evidenced by his recent sharp works at Santa Anita. He could be
overlooked by the general public on Sunday but result in a nice price at the end
of the race. WHILLY (Ire) (Sri Pekan) looked like a monster last year but, in
one start since a runner-up finish in the Dubai Duty Free (UAE-G1), hasn't been
able to reclaim that form. He could come back with a stellar run here, so
consider for part.
CAPITANO (Belong to Me) loves the distance (2-2) and might fill out the
bottom of the exotics. FOURTY NINERS SON (Distorted Humor) brings a three-race
win streak into this one and steps up in class. He could earn a share. SIGINT (Wekiva
Springs) doesn't look fast enough to challenge against these. We can't
recommend.
