Bad Read Sanchez tries stakes company in Proctor Memorial

Last updated: 7/11/14 4:30 PM

Bad Read Sanchez, a smashing 10-length debut winner at Santa Anita on June

20, will make his highly anticipated stakes debut in Sunday's $100,000

W.L. Proctor

Memorial at Los Alamitos. Owned by Reddam Racing and trained by Doug

O'Neill, the Warrior's Reward colt heads a field of six two-year-olds in the

six-furlong event.

The Proctor Memorial shares the spotlight with the $100,000

Cinderella

for two-year-old fillies. Heart of Paradise, who rolled to a 2 1/2-length

decision in her lone start, is the likely favorite among six opponents.

Bad Read Sanchez never appeared to take a deep breath in his first outing,

seizing the lead at the start of the five-furlong maiden special weight before

impressively accelerating away from the competition leaving the far turn, and

earned a respectable 90 BRIS Speed rating. A $130,000 purchase at last year's

Keeneland September Yearling Sale, the bay Kentucky-bred will break from the

innermost post position with a returning Mario Gutierrez.

O'Neill is responsible for four of the six entrants and Wake Up Nick, who is

also owned by Reddam Racing, is the most accomplished of the quartet.

A 9 1/4-length winner over California-bred foes in his May 1 bow, the

chestnut son of Cindago stepped up to defeat open foes in the June 22 Santa

Anita Juvenile, scoring by three-quarters of a length, and registered a 94 Speed

rating last time. Wake Up Nick loses the services of Gutierrez and adds Saul

Arias to the saddle.

Henry's Holiday, another O'Neill trainee, possesses the best Speed rating in

the field, netting a 95 for his maiden win at Santa Anita two back. Campaigned

by Success Racing, the Harlan's Holiday colt will need to improve upon a fourth

in the Santa Anita Juvenile. Edwin Maldonado picks up the mount.

O'Neill also entered Litigation Risk, an unraced colt by Bellamy Road owned

by Reddam Racing.

Santa Anita Juvenile runner-up Story to Tell will be making his third

lifetime start for Dan Hendricks. The Bluegrass Colt colt captured his first

start as the 7-5 favorite on May 23, taking a 4 1/2-furlong maiden event by a

comfortable 1 1/4-length margin, and Joe Talamo retains the assignment.

Peradventure, a 4 1/2-length debut winner over state-bred foes on June 27 at

Santa Anita, rounds out the field. Joe Steiner rides for Scott Rollins.

Heart of Paradise is one of only three winners in the six-furlong Cinderella.

Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, the daughter of More Than Ready rolled to a

front-running tally when debuting in a five-furlong maiden special weight at

Santa Anita June 5, earning a terrific 99 Speed rating in the process, and the

dark bay filly will receive a rider switch to Mike Smith and break from post 2.

Shh She's Ours is a winner over the track, wheeling back off nine days rest

following a 1 3/4-length debut score at five furlongs. The Paul Aguirre charge

led wire to wire last time and will keep Ignacio Puglisi in the irons. Global

Hart exits a victory over $50,000 maiden claiming rivals in her third career

start.

Completing the line-up are La Grange, who ships west for her second career

outing following a runner-up in an Arlington maiden on Polytrack; Abets Abet, a

well-beaten fifth in the June 22 Landaluce and winless from five starts; and

Slew's Charm, who finished a close second in her second career attempt versus

state-bred fillies on June 12.
