Barretts juvenile sale shows declines in gross, average

LONG HOT SUMMER (Street Boss), a California-bred filly, was gaveled down to

trainer Mike Mitchell, agent, for $260,000 at the Barretts May Two-Year-Old in

Training Sale in Pomona, California, on Monday. Offered by McCarthy Bloodstock,

agent, Long Hot Summer toured the ring as Hip No. 90.

The January 7 filly is the first foal produced by the multiple stakes-winning

Hotlantic (Stormy Atlantic). The juvenile's fourth dam was the Grade 2 winner

Special Warmth (Lucky Mike), whose descendants include Grade 1-winning sires

Marlin (Sword Dance) and Stormello (Stormy Atlantic).

The sale topper worked one furlong in :10 at last Friday's under tack show.

LUCKY LOGAN, a California-bred colt by Lucky Pulpit, sold to trainer Peter

Miller, agent, for $150,000. Hip 30 was consigned by Wavertree Stables (Ciaran

Dunne), agent.

The April 26 foal was reared by Treed Cat (Tale of the Cat), a half-sister to

Canadian stakes winner Cut and Shoot (American Chance). This is the extended

family of Golden Pheasant (Caro), who captured the 1990 Arlington Million (G1)

and 1991 Japan Cup.

Lucky Logan, who worked a quarter-mile in :21 2/5 at the under tack show,

previously sold for $37,000 at last fall's Barretts October Yearling Sale.

At the conclusion of trading on Monday, 70 horses had sold for $3,031,500, a

decline of 37.7 percent from last year when the sale of 88 juveniles grossed

$4,869,200. The average declined 21.7 percent, from $55,332 to $43,307, but the

median remained unchanged at $30,000.
