Big Drama breezes between races during Festival of the Sun

Harold Queen's Florida homebred Big Drama, the 2010 Breeders' Cup Sprint champion and Eclipse Award winner, worked six furlongs at Calder on Saturday between races during the track's Festival of the Sun program. Jockey Daniel Centeno was aboard for trainer David Fawkes.
The son of Montbrook is continuing preparations for a title defense run in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs on November 5.
Daily Racing Form correspondent and clocker Mike Welsch timed the afternoon public workout in 1:13 4/5. The splits were caught in :13, :25, :37, :49 and 1:01 2/5, and he galloped out in 1:27.
"That was excellent," Fawkes said after the breeze. "He did everything right. I wanted to work between races to keep him interested. He'll work here again next Saturday (October 22) and then one more time, probably the next Saturday (October 29).
"I don't need to work him at Churchill. We didn't last year. I don't want to change anything, so we'll probably van him up there that Sunday or Monday (October 30-31)." |
Big Drama has won each of his two starts in 2011, the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector
Stakes at Gulfstream Park in January and the Whippleton overnight stakes at
Calder on September 4 following a lengthy freshening on the farm. He missed a
planned start in the Grade 1 Vosburgh Stakes at Belmont Park on October 1 after
spiking a fever the day before, leaving Fawkes to train him up to the $1.5
million Sprint at Churchill.
A pair of Big Drama's stablemates also took the track, albeit during training
hours, to prepare for upcoming engagements. Grade 1 runner-up Apriority and dual Grade 3 heroine
Hot Summer shared the the bullet in 1:00 3/5 for the quickest five-furlong
time on Calder's fast dirt.
Apriority, a son of Grand Slam, could join Big Drama in the Sprint while Hot
Summer, who is by Malibu Moon, is expected to go in next Saturday's Grade 2
Raven Run Stakes.
"Apriority and Hot Summer both worked good this morning, a minute and
change," Fawkes added. "She goes to Keeneland for the Raven Run next Saturday.
Apriority is still a little 'iffy' for the Breeders' Cup (Sprint); we'll see how
it goes."
