Boulanger remains in critical condition
Jockey Gary Boulanger, injured in a spill at Gulfstream Park on Sunday,
remained in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Memorial Regional
Hospital in Hollywood, Florida, on Monday morning but has shown signs of
progress, according to his agent, Cory Moran.
"The doctors are telling us that his vital signs are good, and that he is
responsive to their commands," Moran said. "He underwent two surgeries
yesterday, one to remove his spleen and stop internal bleeding, and another to
remove a blood clot on his brain. As soon as the swelling on his brain subsides,
the doctors will be able to tell us more."
Boulanger, 37, was thrown from the saddle when his mount, IN HAND (Belong to
Me), fell during the running of the Mac Diarmida H. (G3). The jockey suffered
head lacerations and internal injuries. In Hand was euthanized.
A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and a resident of Pembroke Pines,
Florida, Boulanger has been a fixture on the South Florida racing circuit for
more than a decade. He has been the leading rider on several occasions at Calder
Race Course and scored his biggest career victory aboard Dancethruthedawn in the
2001 Queen's Plate S. at Woodbine.
