Breeders' Cup Classic contenders work
Kentucky Derby (G1) and Travers S. (G1) hero STREET SENSE (Street Cry [Ire])
breezed five furlongs over his home track at Churchill Downs on Monday in
preparation for the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) on October 27 at
Monmouth Park.
The dark bay colt completed the distance on a fast track in 1:00 4/5 under
jockey Calvin Borel. The move, which was described as a "maintenance" work by
trainer Carl Nafzger, was the second-fastest of 30 at the distance.
Street Sense was clocked in fractions of :13, :25 1/5, :37 and :48 4/5. He
galloped out six furlongs in 1:13 2/5.
"We got what we needed," Nafzger said. "We just need to keep him going. He's
ready. We need to just go up there and get into Monmouth and do our thing."
"He's fit and he's ready," Borel said. "Since he got back here compared to
Saratoga -- he was doing good there, but he is doing so good right now it's
unbelievable.
"He's doing good, he's hitting the ground good, and he's happy. That's the
main thing. The horse is ready to run -- we just want to keep him happy."
James Tafel, the owner and breeder of Street Sense, was on hand to watch the
workout. The Breeders' Cup Classic is scheduled to be the colt's final career
start and Tafel is hoping for a big finish that could earn his reigning
two-year-old champion strong consideration for the 2007 Eclipse Awards.
"He's gorgeous -- on top of his game," Tafel said. "It's bittersweet, but
we're looking forward to a great race because I think it is as tough a Classic
as I can remember. Our horse is on the top of his game...I'm very proud as an
owner, and particularly proud as the breeder. That's a pretty good combination."
Street Sense is coming off a runner-up finish to HARD SPUN (Danzig) in the
Kentucky Cup Classic S. (G2) on September 29 on Polytrack at Turfway Park. He is
scheduled to leave Churchill Downs Thursday evening and travel by van to
Monmouth Park. Street Sense is expected to arrive at the Oceanport, New Jersey,
track on Friday morning.
At Delaware Park, King's Bishop S. (G1) winner Hard Spun breezed five
furlongs on a fast track in a bullet 1:00 2/5. The move was almost two seconds
faster than the next best of five at the distance.
Trained by Larry Jones, Hard Spun captured the seven-furlong King's Bishop at
Saratoga prior to his front-running, 1 1/4-length victory in the nine-furlong
Kentucky Cup Classic.
On Keeneland's Polytrack, Preakness S. (G1) winner CURLIN (Smart Strike), who
defeated Lawyer Ron (Langfuhr) by a neck in the Jockey Club Gold Cup S. (G1),
breezed five furlongs in 1:01 1/5.
The Steve Asmussen-trained colt finished third to Any Given Saturday (Distorted Humor) and Hard Spun in the Haskell Invitational S. (G1) at Monmouth
Park prior to winning the 1 1/4-mile Jockey Club Gold Cup on September 30 at
Belmont Park.
