Buddy's Saint euthanized

Dual Grade 2 winner BUDDY'S SAINT (Saint Liam), a promising sophomore who had

been nearing a return to the races, broke down in a workout Sunday morning at

Belmont Park and had to be euthanized.

According to Dr. Anthony Verderosa, Chief Examining Veterinarian of The New

York Racing Association (NYRA), Buddy's Saint fractured his left shoulder while

breezing on Belmont's fast main track.

The Bruce Levine-trained three-year-old had a very impressive 2009 juvenile

campaign. The bay broke his maiden by a head last September at Belmont, but was

disqualified to second. He returned in November and romped home a 12-length

winner of the Nashua S. (G2) before adding an easy 4 3/4-length score in the

Remsen S. (G2) to his resume, both at Aqueduct.

In his first and only race this year, Buddy's Saint finished ninth as the 9-5

favorite in the Fountain of Youth S. (G2) at Gulfstream in February, and was

subsequently sidelined with a bone chip in his right front ankle that required

surgery.

He had returned to the worktab on August 28 and had 11 published workouts

with the most recent being four furlongs at Belmont in :48 3/5 on November 8.
