Caribou Club registered his third career graded stakes win when taking the $101,053 Joe Hernandez (G3) at Santa Anita on Tuesday over two-time Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1) winner Stormy Liberal.
Near the back racing down the hillside turf under Joe Talamo, Caribou Club cornered well and found a seam between rivals in the stretch to wear down the pacesetting Conquest Tsunami. He kicked clear to win by 1 1/4 lengths in a time of 1:11.66 for about 6 1/2 furlongs on the firm course.
"I had a big smile on my face when Conquest Tsunami moved himself out turning for home opening the rail for me," Talamo said.
A homebred racing for Glen Hill Farm and trained by Tom Proctor, Caribou Club paid $8.60 as the 3-1 second choice in a field of eight. Stormy Liberal never seriously challenged for the win but edged Conquest Tsunami late for second by a half-length.
Winner of the Laurel Futurity at two, the five-year-old Caribou Club didn't earn his second stakes win until last April when taking the Henry Clark, also at Laurel. He later captured the Connaught Cup (G2) at Woodbine and the Seabiscuit H. (G2) at Del Mar, and placed third to Stormy Liberal in the Eddie D (G3) over the Hernandez course and distance. His record now stands at 17-7-2-4, $504,744.
Caribou Club is a gelded son of City Zip and Broken Dreams, a two-time winner of the Senator Ken Maddy (G3) down the hill at Santa Anita. The Florida-bred's third dam was 1994 Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) winner One Dreamer.
