Coastline flows to Street Sense victory; Clever Beauty

takes Rags to Riches

Coastline was an easy three-length winner of the $61,800

Street Sense on Churchill Downs' opening day of the fall meet Sunday, finishing a mile on the fast main dirt in 1:36 3/5 with Shaun Bridgmohan aboard.

Billed as Stars of Tomorrow I, the card featured nothing but juvenile races all

day long.

The duo took up a pressing position just to the outside of pacesetter and 9-5

second choice Almost Famous, who set opening splits of :22 4/5 and :47.

Coastline maintained his momentum to gain command rounding the turn and drew off

to return $10 for the win as the 4-1 third pick.

"He's such a

kind horse," Bridgmohan said. "(Trainer) Mark (Casse) and (assistant trainer)

Norman (Casse) have

done such a phenomenal job with him, because he's very kind to rate and he

basically just waits for a command. I basically just put him in a stalking

position and he was kind enough to let the bridle go and relax. When I asked him

to pick it up down the lane he really finished up."

Ichiban Warrior dueled briefly with Coastline in the lane after following him

around the turn, but couldn't keep pace and settled for second four lengths

clear of even-money favorite Ride On Curlin.

"He

broke a little slow -- he got a little mixed-up in the gate and didn't leave like

I was hoping he would," jockey Corey Lanerie explained about Ride on Curlin. "My thoughts were I'd be toward the back and behind the

speed. He was just sittin' there, but they backed the pace up a bit slower than

I wanted. But he just didn't finish for me.

"They're going to scope him -- maybe

he's got a little crud or something. But I don't think he was the horse today

that he can be."

Almost Famous tired to fourth and

was followed under the wire by Chippewawhitechief and Cee 'n O after

Phenomenalmoon was withdrawn.

"It's a

disappointment -- it's kind of a head-scratcher on this one," admitted Pat

Byrne, who trains Almost Famous. "I have no idea what

happened. We have no excuses. The first quarter was a little quick, but (jockey) Joe

(Rocco Jr.) backed him up nicely. He had a good trip, no excuses there. It's just a

head-scratcher. I don't know.

"Hopefully it's just one of those toss-out races.

The horse has trained here -- he's trained super. Joe said he didn't back up -- he

just didn't quicken. It's disappointing, for sure."

Coastline just broke his maiden three weeks ago on October 5, scoring in a

Keeneland Polytrack contest by 3 1/2 lengths while going seven furlongs. Prior

to that the Mark Casse trainee made his racing debut during Churchill's new

September stand, running second in a six-furlong event. By taking his stakes bow

in the Street Sense, the gray son of Speightstown improved his career mark to

read 3-2-1-0, $80,779.

"He's shown us all along that he was one of our better two-year-olds.

We've been pretty high on him all along," Casse said. "He trained really good up

to the race, so we were expecting a big performance today."

Bred in Kentucky by DATTT Farm LLC, Coastline sold to John C. Oxley as a

$190,000 Keeneland September yearling. He is out of the Grade 3-winning El

Amante mare Culinary and comes from a black-type rich South American female

family. Among his relatives are Brazilian Horse of the Year Plenty of Kicks and

multiple Group 1 scorers Fantaisie, Heracleon, Canzone and Laurus, just to name

a few.

When asked if Coastline would be returning in the Grade 2, $175,000 Kentucky

Jockey Club on the November 30 Stars of Tomorrow II program, Casse noted, "I'd have to let Dad and Mr. Oxley discuss

that, but that's definitely an option."

The Rags to Riches winner was a real Clever Beauty

(Churchill Downs/Reed Palmer Photography)

Later on Churchill's Sunday program, Green Lantern Stables LLC's Clever

Beauty was four wide on the backstretch of the $62,700

Rags

to Riches before inching away to a three-quarter length victory as the 5-1

fourth pick in the seven-filly field.

Lanerie guided the Rusty Arnold pupil as she settled into fourth while Loya

led the way through fractions of :23 and :47 1/5. Loya faded rounding the turn,

but Clever Beauty had drawn closer by this point and stuck her head in front of

new leader Vexed in the lane. The two battled for the win but Clever Beauty

managed to inch away late to complete the mile-contest in 1:37 3/5.

"She's an improving little filly. She's really doing good this fall," Arnold

said. "We actually got lucky. We entered her in an a-other-than over at

Keeneland that didn't fill. We wanted to run long and this one just fell in the

right spot and we're really happy with her."

"She wanted to lay on 'em and not go by 'em," Lanerie described. "It seemed

like the more I was trying to ride her, the more she wanted to lay on 'em and at

one point I thought she was going to give it away. I don't know what she was

looking at, but she just wouldn't get off of 'em.

"I just kind of held her and held her off of them. I had plenty of horse left

-- it was just a matter of making her go on and do it. She had her ears up and

was looking around, but she ran a huge race."

Vexed held 8-5 favorite Tepin to third by three parts of a length, with

Prepared completing the top four under the line. Next came Ocean Boulevard, Loya

and Hot and Dangerous. Dream S'more was scratched.

Clever Beauty, who was worth $12 for the Rags to Riches win, now boasts a

3-2-0-0, $66,277, lifetime record even though this was the first time she'd ever

crossed under the wire in front. The Indian Charlie bay filly never factored in

her debut at Saratoga in mid-August, then shipped to Churchill Downs for a

September 20 maiden last out. She was second on that occasion but elevated to

first via the disqualification of the winner.

"The (disqualified) winner

(Harlan's Special) came back and ran very respectable in the Alcibiades and I

know that (trainer Gary) Red Dog (Hartlage) loves her," Arnold said. "(Clever Beauty) had

run the one start sprinting but we thought she wanted to go a little bit farther

and we thought she'd improve. She's one of those fillies that is a little hard

to get a handle on because she just keeps coming at you all the time. So we

think there's room for improvement there."

Bred in Kentucky by Tony Holmes, Breffni Farm and Indian Charlie Syndicate,

Clever Beauty passed through the sales ring twice. She brought $45,000 as a

Keeneland November weanling before selling to Green Lantern for that same price

at last year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Clever Beauty is out of the Gulch mare Adorable and Smart, who is a

half-sister to stakes winner Ruthian. That mare is actually herself the dam of

Grade 1 victress Rutherienne and Grade 3 heroine Ruthenia. Clever Beauty's third

dam is Grade 3 vixen Adorable Micol, who produced Grade 3-scoring sire Adcat and

Grade 1-placed stakes diva Adorydar, and her fifth dam is 1958 champion handicap

mare Tempted.
