Colonial Ball tops Fasig-Tipton mixed sale at $65,000

The stakes-placed COLONIAL BALL (Pleasant Colony), a 12-year-old mare offered

in foal to Henny Hughes on an April 11 cover, brought a bid of $65,000 from

Denise Dommel to lead all offerings at Monday's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December

Mixed Sale at Timonium, Maryland. The bay went through the ring as Hip No.

111 and was consigned by Green Willow Farms, agent, to dissolve a partnership.

Colonial Ball was produced from the multiple stakes-winning Dance For Lucy

(Dance Bid), a half-sister to the multiple Grade 3 winner Iron Courage (Caro

[Ire]) and the filly Pinafore Park (Ascot Knight), who captured the third leg of

the Canadian Triple Crown, the Breeders' S., in 1998. Colonial Ball's fourth

dam, Iron Maiden (War Admiral), produced Broodmare of the Year Iron Reward

(*Beau Pere), the dam of Hall of Famer Swaps (*Khaled), as well as his full

sister Track Medal, Broodmare of the Year for Greentree Farm in 1962. Iron

Maiden was also the dam of 1957 Kentucky Derby winner Iron Liege (Bull Lea).

A weanling colt by Eurosilver, consigned by Sally Thomas, agent, went for $50,000 and was the sale's second highest price. The January 24 foal, who

toured the ring as Hip 293, went home to Tonya Jurgens for Ponder Hill.

The chestnut is the second registered foal from the winning Homoginize (Known

Fact), a half-sister to the stakes-winning Salty Punch (Salt Lake). Homoginize

is in-bred to *Persian Maid (Tehran), the ancestress of Obeah

(Cyane), the two-time winner of the Delaware H. who produced Hall of Famer Go

for Wand (Deputy Minister).

On Monday, 186 head sold for $1,169,400, resulting in an average of $6,287

and a median of $3,000. Last year's December Mixed Sale was a two-day affair

which yielded a gross of $2,056,500 from the sale of 287 head, an average of

$7,166 and a median of $3,500.
