Cross Traffic heads to the farm with minor shin injury

Last updated: 10/2/13 3:09 PM

Whitney Invitational Handicap winner

Cross Traffic sustained a minor shin injury when the track broke out from

underneath him at the start of last Saturday's Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park.

"It is very unfortunate for this to happen at this time of

the year because this will prevent him from competing in the Breeder's Cup

Classic," said Todd Quast, general manager of owner GoldMark Farm. "We will bring him

back to GoldMark to evaluate him and based on those findings make decisions

regarding his future."

Cross Traffic has developed into a top handicap horse in a relatively short period of time.

Starting his career at Gulfstream Park on January 24, he reeled off two

impressive victories before tackling graded company in only his third

start.

In the Westchester Stakes, the son of Unbridled's Song lost by a short head to Belmont specialist

Flat Out in a time of 1:32 4/5, which is only three-fifths of a second off the

world record. The four-year-old followed that effort with the narrowest of nose defeats in the Metropolitan Handicap after doing all the hard

work on the front end.

Next came the Whitney, which was

Cross Traffic's first time around two turns. The gray colt turned in a winning

performance, defeating the respective one-two

finishers from the 2012 Breeder's Cup Classic in Fort Larned and Mucho Macho Man

as well as 2012 Travers winner Alpha, who returned next out to take the

Woodward.

Cross Traffic has a record of 3-2-0 from six starts and $687,967 in career

earnings.
