Davona Dale
Arindel Farm's WAIT A WHILE (Maria's Mon) was well in front at the
conclusion of Saturday's $150,000
Davona Dale S. (G2) at Gulfstream Park. Rating
in third in the early going under jockey John Velazquez, the gray sophomore
traveled on the outside
of Teammate (A.P. Indy) while following Stolen Prayer (Songandaprayer) through
fractions of :22 3/5, :45 3/5 and 1:09 2/5. When Teammate was shuffled back on
the far turn, the Todd Pletcher-trained Wait A While closed on the leader.
Wait A While burst to the lead and quickly opened up a sizeable advantage,
ultimately capturing the 1
1/8-mile event by 14 lengths in 1:50 1/5 on the sloppy track. It took a photo to
decipher the blanket finish for second, which was awarded to Teammate with
Wonder Lady Anne L (Real Quiet) a head back in third.
Sent off at odds of nearly 7-2, the winner paid $8.80, $4 and $3, leading $1 exotics of $18.10 (exacta) and
$46.10 (trifecta). The 9-5 favorite Teammate returned $3.40 and $2.60 while
Wonder Lady Anne L gave back $2.80 to show at slightly more than 5-2. Stolen Prayer hit the wire in fourth
at nearly 9-1 to complete the 5-2-7-4 superfecta worth $140.40.
Mia's Reflection (Halo's Image), Meadow Skippin (Skip Away) and Bushfire (Louis
Quatorze) rounded out the order of finish.
Bred in Kentucky by William S. Farish and W. Temple Webber Jr., Wait a While is the first
foal out of the winning Flirtatious (A.P. Indy), who has also produced an
unnamed two-year-old filly by Tiznow. Flirtatious' dam, Grand Charmer (Lord Avie),
won the 1995 Pucker Up S. (G3).
Wait A While improved her mark to 5-3-0-1 while amassing earnings of
$187,280. This was her second stakes victory on an off track, her first coming in the
off-the-turf Miss Grillo S. at Belmont in October. She was purchased for $260,000 at the OBS
February Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training.
