Privately purchased by Gary and Cecil Barber following her

track-record setting maiden romp at Arlington Park, DAWNIE MACHO (Macho

Uno) made a quick return on their investment with a wire-to-wire victory

in Sunday's $100,000

Landaluce S. for juvenile fillies at Hollywood

Park.

In her first start since being transferred to John Sadler, the speedy

chestnut blasted right to the early lead for Joe Talamo and rattled off

splits of :22 2/5, :46 and :57 4/5. Dawnie Macho increased her advantage

to 2 1/2 lengths by that point, but her margin began to evaporate as the

fast-finishing debutante Izshelegal (Maria's Mon) erupted from the back

of the pack.

Izshelegal's furious rally came a fraction too late, and Dawnie Macho

held on by a diminishing three-quarters of a length. Dawnie Macho

negotiated six Cushion Track furlongs in 1:10 3/5 to remain undefeated

from two starts, and boosted her bankroll to $76,800. The winner

returned $7, $4.60 and $3.60 as the 5-2 third choice in the eight-filly

field.

"She not only has speed, but she's rateable," Talamo said. "She broke so

sharp then just came right back to me. When I shook the reins at her she just

took off. She won easy going 4 1/2 (furlongs in her debut) and for her first

time moving forward, it was unbelievable.

"John (Sadler) said they just bought her and worked her one time. I talked to

John this morning and he gave me all the confidence in the world. He said she'll

do whatever you want, and she did. We'll have some fun at Del Mar with her."

Izshelegal, whose momentum carried her past the winner right after the wire,

furnished $13.40 and $6.40 at 20-1. The well-bred gray likely won't be

overlooked again, for she figures to be marked down in many notebooks following

this sterling career debut in a stakes race.

"She's a very talented filly," jockey Victor Espinoza said. "I thought she

would run big, but unfortunately she came running a little bit late. I haven't

been on her, but I watched her work and I saw that she did everything nice and

comfortable. Because it was her first time, I wanted to ride her patient. I just

wanted to let her finish up good."

Izshelegal had 1 1/4 lengths to spare over 2-1 favorite Belleofthebridle (Yes

It's True), who gave back $3 to show. She'll Heir (Wildcat Heir), the 2-1 second

choice off a rough-and-tumble victory in the Cinderella S., retreated to fourth

after chasing Dawnie Macho early. The $1 exotics were worth $58.40 (exacta),

$167.70 (trifecta) and $587.60 (2-4-1-5 superfecta).

Bred by Maurice Miller in Florida, Dawnie Macho is the first registered foal

from the unraced Montbrook mare Blush of Dawn. She was a bargain $5,000 OBS

August yearling, and RNA'd for $49,000 as an OBS April two-year-old.

Dawnie Macho then joined trainer Wayne Catalano at Arlington, and made a big

impression first time out on June 12. Sporting the colors of former owner Wayne

Granger, she wired her maiden special weight rivals by five lengths, and set a

new track record of :51.16 for 4 1/2 furlongs on the Polytrack. That piqued the

interest of the Barbers, and Sadler ventured to Arlington to inspect the filly.

"When I went to Chicago to look at her, she reminded me a lot of Coco Belle

(a multiple stakes-winning sprinter), another horse I trained," Sadler said.

"I flew back to Chicago on the redeye after a Lakers game. I got into Chicago

at 5:30 in the morning and went out to Arlington to look at her. Then I got on a

plane and flew back. We put a deal together about a week after her first race.

"We had a little trouble getting a plane out for her but when I got her back,

she really breezed well Monday (working five furlongs in 1:01 2/5 at Hollywood).

The Sorrento ([G3] on August 6) at Del Mar will be her next start."
