Debutante
Heiligbrodt Racing Stables' RICHWOMAN (Successful Appeal) captured her
second consecutive stakes race and continued her unbeaten streak in her
third career start when annexing the $109,700
S. (G3) at Churchill Downs on Saturday. Settled in fifth through splits of :21 4/5
and :45 3/5 by jockey Shaun Bridgmohan, the dark bay lass was steadied at both
the half-mile mark and five-sixteenths pole as Come Together (Dixie Union),
Beautiful Venue (Came Home) and Gallant Dreamer (Belong to Me) battled for the
early lead.
Even-money favorite Chagall (Successful Appeal), who was at one point last in
the fray, gained a one-length advantage in the straight after running six wide
on the back stretch and four wide on the turn. She was clear in upper stretch,
but couldn't hold on to that spot as Richwoman made her charge for home to
capture the six-furlong event by a neck, stopping the timer in 1:10 2/5 over a
fast track.
Sent off the 8-5 second favorite, Richwoman completed exotics of $11.20
(exacta), $27.20 (trifecta) and $113.80 (1-7-2-6 superfecta) while giving
payoffs of $5.20, $2.60 and $2.10. Chagall finished five lengths ahead of her
nearest rival to return $2.40 and $2.10 while Lenaro (Buddha) paid $2.60 for the
show at 5-1. Gallant Dreamer, Come Together and Beautiful Venue rounded out the
order of finish. Seaside Affair (Sea of Secrets) was scratched, as she had been
purchased after this race was drawn and her new connections did not want her to
run in this spot.
Bred in Florida by her owners, Richwoman is out of the stakes-winning mare
Richbabe (Richman), whose latest foal is a yearling colt named Fifth Circuit
also by Successful Appeal. Richwoman broke her maiden at first asking by seven
lengths on April 9 before coming back in her next outing to annex the Cinderella
S. last out. After this victory, she doubled her bankroll to $134,170 while
improving her record to 3-3-0-0.
