Dettori out for season after fracturing ankle

Last updated: 10/2/13 5:47 PM

Frankie Dettori will miss the rest of this season, and the plum ride aboard

the unbeaten Treve in Sunday's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, after fracturing his

ankle in a fall at Nottingham on Wednesday.

The rider was thrown from Eland Ally on the way to post for a five-furlong

handicap at the Colwick Park track and landed awkwardly. The rider was aided to

his feet by swift-acting paramedics, but was unable to support his own weight.

Initially thought to have sustained soft-tissue damage, later X-rays

confirmed he had broken his right ankle.

Thierry Jarnet, who rode Treve to her first three victories, will renew his

association with the Prix de Diane and Prix Vermeille victress.

"It's bad news, not good news," the Italian's business manager Peter Burrell

told PA Sport. "He went to Cambridge Hospital and X-rays found that he had

suffered a fractured ankle. He was extremely disappointed on the telephone and

did not want to discuss it much more than that. It's an extremely painful

injury. Sunday (at Longchamp) is out, as is the season."

Treve's trainer Criquette Head-Maarek added, "I have spoken to Frankie and I

have spoken to (owner) Sheikh Joaan (bin Hamad Al Thani), who has agreed that

Thierry Jarnet will ride Treve on Sunday. He knows the filly very well and won

the Prix de Diane on her in June. It is bad luck for Frankie, but that is life

in racing."
