Multiple Grade 1 winner and prominent sire DIXIE UNION (Dixieland Band) was euthanized

Wednesday at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Kentucky due to a deteriorating neurologic problem.

The 13-year-old stallion stood at Mr. and Mrs. William S. Farish's Lane's

End Farm near Versailles, Kentucky.

"We are extremely saddened by the loss of Dixie Union," Farish said. "He

was a beautiful horse and a terrific young sire. We want to express our

gratitude to the dedicated team of experts who helped care for him, as well as

to his owners who entrusted us with him. He will be buried in the Lane's End

cemetery."

Dixie Union was bred by Herman Sarkowsky and raced for his breeder in

partnership with Gerald Ford's Diamond A Racing Corp. He won seven of his 12

starts, including the Haskell Invitational (G1), Malibu S. (G1), Norfolk S.

(G2), Best Pal S. (G3) and Hollywood Juvenile

Championship (G3).

During two seasons of racing, the dark bay accumulated $1,233,190 in lifetime

earnings while competing against the likes of Horse of the Year Tiznow, champion

Anees and Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) hero Captain Steve.

Dixie Union is out of Grade 2 victress She's

Tops (Capote) and comes from the same family as Broodmare of the Year Fall Aspen

(Pretense); classic-winning champion and sire Timber Country (Woodman); and

champion turf horse and sire Cozzene (Caro [Ire]).

From seven crops of racing age, Dixie Union has sired 34 stakes winners and

an additional 21 stakes-placed runners. His progeny have earned in excess of

$23.6 million. Among his top runners are Hot Dixie Chick, queen of last season's Spinaway

S. (G1), and Dixie Chatter, triumphant in the 2007 Norfolk

S. (G1).
