Sold last month at auction by Padua Stable, Grade 2 winner and Breeders' Cup

Filly & Mare Sprint runner-up Dust and Diamonds easily prevailed in her debut

for trainer Todd Pletcher in Saturday's $100,000

Sugar

Swirl at Gulfstream Park.

Ridden by John Velazquez the four-year-old Kentucky-bred edged clear

approaching the quarter pole and drew off in the stretch to win by a comfortable

2 3/4 lengths as the the heavy 1-2 favorite. Dust and Diamonds returned $3,

$2.40 and $2.10 after completing six furlongs in a snappy 1:08 3/5 over a fast

track.

Trainer Marty Wolfson, who originally entered three in the Sugar Swirl but

scratched Spectacular Sky, saw his other representatives -- Golden Mystery and

Nakano -- finish second and third, respectively. Golden Mystery had 1 1/4

lengths on her stablemate at the finish, with Nakano three parts of a length

clear of second choice Sacristy at the wire. Honey Chile and Hearts of Red

completed the order of finish.

Dust and Diamonds raced for trainer Michael Trombetta at two, winning her

debut at Laurel before finishing a distant third in the Presque Isle Debutante.

Off nearly a year before her next start, Dust and Diamonds won a Saratoga

allowance by more than eight lengths in her debut for trainer Steve Asmussen,

but completed her abbreviated three-year-old campaign with a pair of thirds

against allowance foes over off tracks.

Third against allowance foes at Santa Anita in her season debut January 2,

Dust and Diamonds next passed her second allowance condition at Oaklawn by 4 1/2

lengths on March 24. She was then off until July 21, when she romped by 5 3/4

lengths in the Dashing Beauty at Delaware Park.

Dust and Diamonds made her graded stakes debut in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom

Handicap at Belmont Park on September 22. Prominent throughout, the filly drove

home a 1 1/4-length winner with the likes of champion Musical Romance and

multiple Grade 1 winner Turbulent Descent left in her wake. She also turned in a

stellar performance in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Santa Anita last

month, finishing a clear second to presumptive divisional titlist Groupie Doll.

Sold for $900,000 to Borges Torrealba Holdings and Three Chimneys Racing at

the Fasig-Tipton November Sale three days after the Breeders' Cup, Dust and

Diamonds now sports a record of 11-6-1-4, $496,260.

Sired by breeder Padua's late 2002 juvenile colt champion Vindication, Dust

and Diamonds was produced by the winning Majestically, a daughter of Gone West

and multiple stakes winner Darling Dame. This is the extended family of Grade 1

queen Sand Springs and, further back, European superstar Dancing Brave and his

classic-winning full sister Jolypha.
