Field favored in Derby Pool 2
The mutuel field for all other three-year-olds remained the favorite at 3-1
after the closing of Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager which concluded
on Sunday evening. Over four days of wagering, the all other three-year-olds
pool garnered $91,994.
BROTHER DEREK (Benchmark) led all individual entries at 10-1 after a 1
3/4-length score in Saturday's San Rafael S. (G2). The Dan Hendricks trainee
attracted $34,417. Remsen S. (G2) hero BLUEGRASS CAT (Storm Cat), a recent
victor in the Sam Davis S., was the second most highly backed individual entrant
at 11-1, while amassing $31,049 in wagers. Bluegrass Cat is likely for the Tampa
Bay Derby (G3) on March 18. PRIVATE VOW (Broken Vow) was bet down to13-1 while taking in $26,668. The Futurity S. (G2) winner will
most likely be making his next appearance in the Rebel S. (G3) at Oaklawn Park
on March 18.
Three horses tied for the fourth spot at 15-1 -- CORINTHIAN (Pulpit)
($23,163), who dropped from 50-1 at the opening of Pool 2 after placed third in
the Fountain of Youth S. (G2), Whirlaway S. winner ACHILLES OF TROY (Notebook)
($23,973) and Holy Bull S. (G3) victor BARBARO (Dynaformer) ($24,194).
The pool was trimmed to 23 entrants when Barbican (A.P. Indy) was taken out
of consideration for the Derby after suffering a fractured right hind ankle
during a workout on Thursday.
Total wagering on Pool 2 reached $464,236, down from last year's total of
$511,655. Total betting for the Kentucky Derby Future Wager stands at
$1,016,863. The third and final pool will be conducted on April 6-9.
