Frolic's Dream, Renda face off in Davona Dale
FROLIC'S DREAM (Smoke Glacken) suffered her first career loss when third by a
head in the Old Hat S. (G3) in her sophomore debut. The gray lass got back to
her winning ways on January 30 with an easy 2 1/2-length score in the Forward
Gal S. (G2), and will seek to vindicate that score in Sunday's
$150,000
Davona Dale S. (G2) going a one-turn mile on Gulfstream Park's dirt.
The Davona Dale shares the weekend with the Fountain of Youth S. (G2), and
while that test serves as a prep for the Florida Derby (G1) on March 28 and
ultimately the May 2 Kentucky Derby (G1), the fillies' race is the next step in
Southern Florida to the Kentucky Oaks (G1) on May 1. Winner of her first three
starts by a combined 15 lengths, Frolic's Dream will stretch out past seven
furlongs for the first time in the Davona Dale. She'll also be saddled by a new
conditioner in Barclay Tagg, who takes over training duties from Marty Wolfson,
and will get a rider switch from Jermaine Bridgmohan to John Velazquez.
Dual stakes victress RENDA (Medaglia d'Oro) came with a game rally to be
second in the Forward Gal last out, but holds an edge over her rival in this one
since she's already won at a mile or longer. The Juan Arias-trained dark bay
posted a seven-length score in the eight-furlong Junior Champion S. at Monmouth
Park last August, then returned next out at a mile-and-70-yards to add a 5
1/4-length win in Calder's Brave Raj S. to her record. Edgar Prado, aboard for
the Forward Gal, retains the mount.
Another with experience winning at eight furlongs is the undefeated SHARED
ACCOUNT (Pleasantly Perfect). Trained by Graham Motion, the bay miss broke her
maiden going a mile at Laurel Park in late October, and moved her line to a
perfect two-for-two with a seven-length victory in an allowance/optional claimer
when stretching out to 1 1/16 miles on January 17. She'll be making her Florida
debut in this one, but will keep regular rider and Maryland mainstay Jeremy Rose
in the irons.
