Frolic's Revenge, Say a Novena work for upcoming stakes

Last updated: 4/12/12 1:51 PM

Stride Rite Racing Stable Inc.'s Frolic's Revenge, winner of the $75,000

Lindsay Frolic Stakes on the Calder main track last year, continued her

preparations for a start in the $100,000 Calder Oaks on April 28, covering one

mile of fast Calder dirt in 1:44 2/5 on Thursday.

"If you saw the work this morning, she just looked great," trainer Milt

Wolfson said. "And when she came back, she wasn't blowing or anything."

Frolic's Revenge is winless in three starts this year, crossing the wire

third in the $100,000 Sweetest Chant before putting together consecutive

seventh-place finishes in the Grade 2 Davona Dale on dirt and the Grade 3

Herecomesthebride on turf where she raced on the lead for the first time in her

career.

"I'm not sure what happened in her last, but I'm not going to worry much

about that," Wolfson said. "I think she's coming up to this race in great shape,

and that's what matters now."

In addition to her main track victory in the Lindsay Frolic, Frolic's Revenge

found the wire first in the $60,000 Ginger Brew on the Gulfstream Park turf

course in December. She was also second in last season's Brave Raj and third in

the J J'sdream, both on the main track at Calder.

"She's pretty versatile and has shown that she can run on dirt or turf,"

Wolfson said. "And that's something you really want since there are a couple of

stakes here later in the year, on both surfaces, that we hope to make."

Potential mid-season targets for the dark bay daughter of Vindication include

the Three Ring Stakes at a mile and 70 yards on July 21, the Crystal Rail Stakes

over 7 1/2 furlongs of Calder turf on August 18, and the Judy's Red Shoes, run

at 1 1/16 miles on turf September 15 during the Tropical meet.

Another stakes-bound three-year-old filly took to the Calder main track to

work Thursday morning as Rick Shanley's Say a Novena breezed five furlongs in

1:02 2/5 for trainer Eddie Plesa. It was the filly's second work this month

after taking some time off following her second-place finish in the Grade 2

Forward Gal on January 29.

"She's doing really well, and that work this morning was just what I wanted

to see," Plesa said. "It wasn't too quick, but it wasn't slow either. And I got

her galloping out in 1:15 and one, so I'm really happy with what she did today."

Winner of the Brandywine Stakes at Parx Racing and the Colleen Stakes at

Monmouth Park last year, while also finishing second in the Grade 2 Matron at

Belmont Park, Say a Novena has made two starts this year, crossing the wire

second in both the Forward Gal and the Grade 3 Old Hat at Gulfstream.

"Right now we're looking at the Miss Preakness Stakes at Pimlico for her next

start," Plesa said. "She'll stay down here right up until the time we're ready

to ship up for that race."

The $100,000 Miss Preakness, contested at six furlongs, will be run May 18.
