Garcia remains hospitalized

Jockey Martin Garcia remained in Arcadia Methodist Hospital Monday morning

for observation after undergoing X-rays following a mishap in the 6TH race at

Santa Anita on Sunday, according to his agent, Roger Olguin.

"He was complaining of lower back pain and doctors felt it would be better to

keep him in the hospital in case something unforeseen developed," Olguin said.

Garcia, a finalist for an Eclipse Award for outstanding apprentice of 2006,

was unseated from Sweet N Salty (Salt Lake) when she collapsed from apparent

exhaustion shortly after crossing the finish line. Sweet N Salty, a

three-year-old first-time starter, finished ninth in the six-furlong maiden

special weight race after dueling for the lead through fractions of :21, :44 4/5

and :57 3/5. It took 46 minutes before she was able to stand and walk back to

her barn.

"It looked like she had become exhausted," said Dr. Rick Arthur, equine

medical director for the California Horse Racing Board. "It didn't appear to be

heat exhaustion, because it was a very unusual day for that (due to cold

weather). I didn't get there until 20 minutes after she went down, and by then

she was becoming more alert and willing to try (to get up). It's very hard to

try and figure out exactly what the problem was, but it was very unusual and we

hardly ever see that. But the good thing is, she recovered and walked back

fine."

Trainer Brian Koriner said after the incident, "She was out of breath but it

looks like she's fine. She laid there and played it out a long time, but she

walked home, she's cooling out and she's good."
