General Quarters breezes five furlongs in 1:01 4/5
At Churchill Downs on Thursday, Blue Grass S. (G1) hero GENERAL QUARTERS (Sky Mesa) traveled five furlongs in 1:01 4/5 on the fast track, turning in his final major exercise for the May 2 Kentucky Derby (G1). His move ranked as the 13th fastest of 30 at the distance. "I was looking for between 1:01 and 1:02, so this was perfect," owner-trainer Tom McCarthy said. "I wanted a nice, steady work, and that is what I got. I did not want anything like his work before the Blue Grass (:58 1/5 on April 4). I am happy with the work." "He went nice and easy, very comfortable," said exercise rider Julie Sheets, who has been General Quarters' regular morning partner since the colt arrived here last month.

The gray colt posted fractions of :12 3/5, :24 1/5, :36 3/5 and :48 4/5. He
was caught galloping out six furlongs in 1:16 1/5 by Churchill Downs clockers.
General Quarters blossomed over the winter at Tampa Bay Downs, finishing
second in the Inaugural S. and Pasco S. before breaking through with a 3
1/2-length score in the Sam F. Davis S. (G3). A troubled fifth in the Tampa Bay
Derby (G3), he rebounded by upsetting Keeneland's Blue Grass at 14-1.
The Kentucky-bred has compiled a mark of 11-3-3-1, $641,735, with $595,645 in
graded earnings.
McCarthy said General Quarters would walk on Friday.
