TRACK BANDIT PREVIEWS

Five of the 10 entered in Saturday's $350,000 Goodwood S. (G1) at Santa Anita

have won Grade 1 races in their careers. CHOCOLATE CANDY (Candy Ride [Arg]), a

solid sophomore for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, is not one of those and might be

overlooked in this race. The proven synthetic performer twice placed in Grade 1

races and comes in off of a perfect prep for this demanding test. Breaking from

the rail, the three-year-old colt could secure a decent position early and will

surely be in the mix turning for home. We view the bay as a live longshot under

Victor Espinoza.

RICHARD'S KID (Lemon Drop Kid) upset the Pacific Classic S. (G1) most

recently for Bob Baffert and is clearly better on synthetic ovals than he was on

any other surface throughout his career. The peaking four-year-old was the

beneficiary of a dream set up at Del Mar last out, but to the colt's credit,

he's run two nice races in succession and just might be coming into his own late

in his campaign. We'll use the dark bay in everything under Alex Solis.

Multiple Grade 1 victor TIAGO (Pleasant Tap) has won once from his last 10

starts for John Shirreffs, but the five-year-old always fires and should be used

in the vertical gimmicks. The bay has three wins at this locale and was a

closing second in this event last campaign, but the potential lack of pace could

lead to his undoing beneath Mike Smith.

Kentucky Derby (G1) hero MINE THAT BIRD (Birdstone) has not been on this

strip since finishing last in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) last season, but

it's safe to say that the Chip Woolley pupil is a different animal this go

around. A strong second in the Preakness S. (G1) and a good third in the Belmont

S. (G1), the hard-trying gelding was brought here early to prepare for this but

probably isn't fully cranked up for this engagement, and we think he'll have to

be in order to top these. We'll watch this one under Calvin Borel, who makes the

trek from the Midwest.

Dual Grade 1 hero COLONEL JOHN (Tiznow) was troubled by a tight trip in the

Pacific Classic last out but could have needed the race anyhow for Eoin Harty.

The classy four-year-old, who has three wins from five tries on this oval, has

run some top races in the past and should be poised for a seasonal best on this

day. Grade 1 victor MONZANTE (Maria's Mon) has raced just once this campaign,

closing for second in the Windy Sands H. last out, and has shown in the past

that he is capable of big things on his best day. The Mike Mitchell trainee has

a powerful turn of foot when he's on his game and looked the part with a stylish

score in the Santana Mile H. last season, so he's another we will use in the

exotics.

Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) second TRES BORRACHOS (Ecton Park) is clearly the

only speed in this group and will take this field as far as his legs let him for

Beau Greely. We have mixed emotions about the gelding, as we've never thought of

him as a Grade 1 winner, but we do acknowledge that he should be clear for much

of this race. We will leave this one up to you. We've been on the PARADING

(Pulpit) bandwagon in the past but we're officially off, and we'll let the

well-bred, Shug McGaughey charge beat us in here. The talented chestnut was a

decent fourth in the Pacific Classic last out but will need better to challenge

this field.

We've never been big on Grade 2 winner INFORMED (Tiznow) and we don't like

him against this quality group for Doug O'Neill. European import GITANO HERNANDO

(GB) (Hernando [Fr]) looks hopeless to us in this deep field.
