Raymond H Cottrell Sr.'s PRINCE ARCH (Arch) gained an advantage late between

horses and held off numerous challenges in gamely taking the $230,000

Gulfstream

Park Breeders' Cup H. (G1) on Sunday. The four-year-old colt rated in midpack

tracking splits of :24, :48 2/5, 1:12 3/5 and 1:35 4/5 for the opening mile

beneath Brice Blanc. As the field approached the turn for home, the Kenny McPeek

trainee began to gain momentum, eventually winning by a nose and completing 1

3/8 grassy miles in 2:11 2/5 on a firm course. Sent off at a generous 7-1, the winner was good

for $16.60, $8.40 and $4.

Gigli (Brz) (Clackson) was stuck in traffic as they straightened for home, but

once the seven-year-old got clear, it was just a nose that kept him from getting

his picture taken. The 9-1 shot paid $9.80 and $5.20 while completing the $88.20

exacta ($1). Mustanafar (Unbridled) was likely the unluckiest one in the bunch,

as the colt was at least four wide throughout and fell just another half-length

back. He was worth $2.60 at 7-5, and rounded out the $266.30 trifecta ($1). It

was another neck back to Navesink River (Unbridled), who sat on the bottom of

the $2,013.60 superfecta ($1) at 7-1.

It was just a nose to fifth-place finisher Demeteor (Dehere), who was

followed by Macaw (Ire) (Bluebird), Swagger Stick (Cozzene), Host (Tabasco Cat), Niigon

(Unbridled), Quest Star (Broad Brush) and Rio Guapore (Br) (Cigano-Road).

Prince Arch moved his lifetime mark to 14-6-4-1 with earnings of

$569,186. The bay registered his first Grade 1 tally in here, and also claimed

the Saranac H. (G3), Jefferson Cup H. (G3) and Forerunner S. The consistent sort

has also earned placings in the Palm Beach H. (G3), American Turf S. (G3),

Virginia Derby and Caltech H.

Bred in the Bluegrass State by Pine Lake Bloodstock LLC, Prince Arch fetched

a bid of $37,000 at the 2002 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He was produced

from the winning Princess Kris (GB) (Kris) and has an unraced two-year-old

half-sister named Prinquet (Marquetry).
