Haynesfield's first winner surveys his Realm at Saratoga

Last updated: 7/25/15 8:55 PM

Grade 1-winning millionaire Haynesfield (Speightstown) got off the mark as a

freshman sire at Saratoga Saturday when Realm captured his debut in the

1ST

race. Co-owned by trainer Barclay Tagg, Eric Dattner and Harry Astarita, the

11-1 chance pressed 2-5 favorite Moon King (Malibu Moon) before asserting by 1

3/4 lengths. Moon King faded to fourth. Realm finished the 5 1/2-furlong maiden

special weight on the fast track in 1:05 beneath Cornelio Velasquez.

Bred by Morgan's Ford Farm in Virginia, Realm has twice sold as a yearling at

Fasig-Tipton. The dark bay brought $36,000 at Kentucky July and $75,000 at the

Midlantic Fall sale. A half-brother to stakes winner North Freeway (Jump Start)

and stakes-placed Shenandoah Lady (Purim), he was produced by multiple Grade 3

victress Shawnee Country (Chief's Crown).

Haynesfield reached peak form in 2010, winning the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1)

and Suburban (G2) and just missing in the Cigar Mile (G1). His resume features

six additional stakes victories, highlighted by the 2009 Discovery (G3) and two

renewals of the Empire Classic. The sturdy chestnut amassed $1,319,481 from a

record of 19-10-2-1.

Out of Grade 2-placed stakes scorer Nothing Special (Tejabo), from the

extended family of Touch Gold (Deputy Minister) and With Approval (Caro), the

nine-year-old Haynesfield stands at Airdrie Stud, near Midway, Kentucky, for

$10,000 live foal.
